Du Dawei, American, director of the East Asia and Pacific China and Mongolia Bureau of the world bank, is resident in Beijing.
Prior to this position, Mr. Du Dawei was director of the Development Research Bureau of the world bank, in charge of the bank's research work in the fields of investment environment and economic growth. He co authored World Bank reports globalization, growth and poverty and evaluation aid. His early research topics focused on aid and economic growth, the determinants of success or failure of structural adjustment loan supported reform programs, etc. He has been a key spokesman for the world bank on investment environment, globalization and aid effectiveness. Mr. Du Dawei joined the world bank in 1990 as an economist in Asia. Before 1995, he was the world bank's chief economist in charge of Vietnam. During the period of Vietnam's stabilization and market economy transition, he provided economic policy advice to the Vietnamese government and was responsible for the preparation of the first country assistance strategy of the world bank to assist Vietnam's transition. Prior to joining the world bank, Mr. Du Dawei was a professor in the Department of economics at UCLA, and he published a lot of works in the fields of productivity growth, technology transfer and East Asian development. He was a visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for one semester. He holds a doctorate in economics from New York University and a bachelor's degree in Chinese history and language from Dartmouth College.
