Xu Xinfu (1897-1968) was born in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province. In 1920, after graduating from Xuhui public school in Shanghai, he cooperated with Chen Shouzhi and others to form the China film research society, and took part in the shooting of Yan Ruisheng, China's first ministerial feature film. In 1924, he joined the Greater China Film Company and directed the film "battle merit", which expressed his dissatisfaction with the warlords' scuffle at that time. Later, he went to the Philippines to develop picture distribution business. In 1931, he was the director of star film company, directing films such as salt tide, daughter classic, beautiful heart, blood and loyal soul, etc. Among them, the salt tide adapted by Zheng Boqi and a Ying puts forward the distinct theme of class struggle; the beautiful heart edited by him takes the Northeast Volunteer Army's resistance to the enemy as the theme, and to a certain extent shows the masses' anti Japanese enthusiasm. Later, in Xinhua and other film companies, he directed "Emerald horse", "flying corpse of boudoir" and other detective horror films. In 1942, he participated in directing the film "fraternity" in "Zhonglian". after the victory of the Anti Japanese War, he was the director of Cathay Pacific Film Company, directing such films as pink bomb and shadow of the ancient house. In 1948, he set up his own Vientiane film company in Taiwan and worked as the producer of Taiwan's first Mandarin film "the storm of Alishan". In 1954, he was director of Taichung factory of Taiwan agricultural education film company, directing films such as love between sun and Moon Lake. After 1958, he served as a consultant for Taiwan Central Film Corporation and Taiwan Provincial film studio. He died in Hong Kong.
