Ye Chao (1913-1988) was born in Huangpi District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province. He joined the Communist Youth League of China in 1932. He joined Yan'an military university in 1937 and the Communist Party of China in the same year. During the Anti Japanese War, he served as the staff officer and deputy chief of the combat section of the headquarters of the New Fourth Army.

After the founding of the people's Republic of China, he served as the chief of staff of the artillery command of the East China military region, the deputy commander and chief of staff of the artillery command, the director of the artillery military scientific research department of the Chinese people's Liberation Army, the vice president of the artillery scientific and Technological Research Institute, the artillery commander of the Shenyang Military Region, the president of the Army Ordnance Research Institute of the national defense science and Technology Commission, and the deputy chief of staff of the Shenyang Military Region. He was promoted to the rank of major general in 1961. In February 1948, Nie Fengzhi sent Ye Chao to lead some members of the column headquarters to understand the enemy situation in the Zhoucun area of boxing and formulate a nine column combat plan. Ye Chao appointed the chief of the reconnaissance section of the column headquarters and the Deputy instructor of the reconnaissance battalion to lead the reconnaissance company 1, went deep into the enemy occupied area to carry out reconnaissance, and initially found out the enemy's organizational system, number, troop deployment, fortification construction and troop morale in Zhoucun area. At this time, the enemy's reorganized 32 divisions suddenly took over the defense of Zhoucun. Ye Chao urgently ordered the reconnaissance company 1 to find out the situation of the reorganized 32 divisions. Reconnaissance company 1 captured a number of "tongues" and seized a number of important intelligence. The scouts also sneaked into Zhoucun city and used various reconnaissance means to complete the reconnaissance task. During the cultural revolution, Bayi film studio made this story into the national famous feature film "scout".

All his life in the army, he was brave and indomitable. In the South Anhui Incident, which shocked China and foreign countries, he showed his firm revolutionary belief. During the war of liberation, he moved to the north and the South and took part in the battles of Laiwu, Menglianggu, Nanma, Jinan, Huaihai, crossing the Yangtze River and liberating Shanghai, contributing to the liberation of the motherland. During the period of socialist revolution and construction, he firmly supported and implemented the party's line, principles and policies, and made unremitting efforts to build a modern revolutionary army.
Comrade Ye Chao died of illness in Beijing on January 15, 1988 at the age of 75.
