Wang Wei, born in 1973 in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, is the founder and former CEO of tudou.com, a video sharing website, and the founder of Zhuoguang animation.
In January 2005, Wang Wei founded tudou.com. Tudou.com was listed on NASDAQ in August 2011. On August 23, 2012, after Youku's acquisition of Tudou was officially completed, it announced that it would retire from tudou.com. In March 2013, Wang Wei disclosed his next project to the outside world: lighting animation.
Character experience
Born in a doctor's family in Fuzhou, Wang Wei's career path has nothing to do with the shrewd "Fujian businessmen". The middle school studied in Fuzhou No.11 middle school. After dropping out of the middle school, he went abroad to study.
Before the founding of tudou.com, Wang Wei was the director of enterprise development and CEO of Bertelsmann Online China at the headquarters of Bertelsmann group in Germany. During this period, Wang Wei was responsible for the strategic planning of Bertelsmann group in China and the restructuring of Bertelsmann Online China.
From 1997 to 2001, Wang Wei worked in Hughes company. During his tenure as business development manager, Wang Wei was responsible for satellite broadband and satellite TV business in Asian market. Wang Wei also participated in Hughes' strategic planning and M & A in Asia.
After living in the United States and France for eight years and one year, Wang Wei lived in Shanghai and now lives in Beijing.
Wang holds an MBA from INSEAD (Fontainebleau, France) and a master's degree in computer science from Johns Hopkins University.
In the early morning of August 24, 2012, Wang Wei posted on his micro blog that "on the night of Qixi, potato in seven years, officially retired tonight. Thank you for your brothers and sisters, and thank you for the color left in the story by everyone who passed by on the way... Goodbye in the next interesting dream "and announce the official retirement.
In March 2013, Wang Wei, the 39 year old founder of tudou.com, was speeding up his next project: chasing light animation. The new animated film studio is located in Beijing. After that year, I always wanted to go to college. One day walking in the street, he panicked. "Is that how I am?" He asked himself. He decided to go to a completely strange place and find a new self. He applied for a scholarship to a school in New York.
"Why do you want to study in America?" Visa officer asked Wang Wei. "I'm suffocating in China, and I can't find what I want to do." Wang Wei said, "however, I will come back." The visa officer looked at him from the back of his glasses, stamped a stamp on the form and said, "I hope the United States won't let you suffocate."
After that, Wang Wei spent nine years studying abroad and working in the United States and France, until he met podcast and had a dream of starting a business. "Is this a good idea or a rubbish idea?" This is the most uneasy time for Wang Wei to start his own business. There is no successful case to learn from, let alone the future of this model.
"On April 15, 2005, there were five people. It's going to be early in the morning. My development engineer and I are staring at the computer screen, hesitating whether or not to release Tudou At that time, he and his team were just a group of rookies. There was no YouTube in the world. What tudou.com opened was a recipe website. They were full of fear: "release?" The engineer urged me. I said, "release it. I've paid 800 yuan for the press release. No refund. "
"When I graduated from high school, I went abroad to study in University," Wang Wei said, but the reason was not that my grades were too good or that my family had abundant funds and insisted on sending him abroad. "I really couldn't do the college entrance examination, which was far from the score line." Fortunately, another popular trend in Fujian gave Wang Weixin a choice. "At that time, it was very popular in Fujian to send children abroad to study in University, so my parents saved money and paid for my tuition.".
In retrospect, Wang Wei was not shy about his past as a "poor student", because after he arrived at Staten Island College in the United States, he immediately became a top student, ranking top next time, and "might be more used to the teaching methods there". His years of study in the United States also made Wang Wei more influenced by American culture. He spoke directly, had the courage to try, and also dared to ask .
However, unlike many Chinese students with scholarships, Wang Wei's life in University was much harder. "With my family's money, I'm also very economical and work everywhere. I've washed dishes, served as a restaurant waiter, and delivered takeout. Today, Wang Wei still has a fresh memory of this period of time, so that when he comes across a restaurant in China that can just tip, he always "hands" without hesitation, "it's not easy for a restaurant waiter.".
In 1996, Wang Wei joined Hughes satellite company of the United States, but found that his technical skills were not enough, so he decided to continue to study for a master's degree. "It was estimated that the company didn't study my study application very carefully at that time, because I needed a full-time job and had to get a master's degree," Wang Wei recalled. "When my colleagues realized what I was going to do, they were shocked.".
Wang Wei started his study at Johns Hopkins University and entered the most difficult period of his life. He needed to work full-time and fly from Washington to Beijing once a month. He had to study while working full-time. However, it took Wang Wei only one year and three months to get his master's degree in computer science.
In 1999, Wang Wei was sent back to the Beijing Branch of Hughes satellite company by the US headquarters to launch new products in the Asia Pacific market.
Wang Wei lived a long life in gold collar. During the Internet bubble, he went to MBA, France, Fontainebleau Europe Business School. Later, he was invited to join Bertelsmann online. "Later I thought about why I wanted to start a business, which may be related to this series of experiences," Wang Wei recalled. "If you are a professional manager, you can be responsible for the business in China at most. I think if you want to be more interesting, you have to start a business.".
Because of love, Wang Wei missed his only chance to be the boss of Tudou. In November 2010, just as tudou.com was preparing to go public in the United States for many years, Wang Wei's ex-wife Yang Lei came out halfway and asked to split 38% of tudou.com's shares. Finally, Wang Wei paid $7 million in cash compensation to settle the divorce case.
On March 13, 2013, after running China's largest online video website, Wang Wei is accelerating to start his next project: Chinese version of Pixar.
At 0:34 a.m. on August 23, 2012, Wang Wei said on his micro blog: "on the night of the seventh lunar New Year's Eve, seven year's potato, I will officially retire tonight (the night of August 23). Wang Wei's animation studio is scheduled to officially open on April 1, 2013.
On May 8, 2013, Wang Wei officially announced through his microblog that the name of the new animation studio was set as "chasing light animation".

On March 12, 2015, the first 3D animation movie "little door god" of Zhuoguang animation released its first trailer in Beijing. Within two hours, the topic of "little door god of movies" jumped to the top of the "hot list of movies" on Weibo.
