On April 27, 1942, Yang Likun was born in a Yi family in Mohei Town, Ning'er County, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province. When Yang Likun was four or five years old, her mother died of overwork, which made her family more difficult. Yang had to drop out of primary school. In 1952, Yang's elder sister, who was far away from Kunming, took her to Kunming and fostered her in her second sister's home. Because her family was a little better, Yang continued to study in school. In the same year, Yang entered Kunming Xincun primary school. In 1954, Yang Likun and her second sister went to see a performance. Hu Zonglin, head of the provincial song and dance troupe, found that she was a good girl. Yang Likun joined the provincial song and dance troupe as a student. In 1955, Yang Likun officially participated in the performance of the troupe and became a solo dancer. In 1957, Yang Likun participated in the China Myanmar friendship delegation and visited the union of Myanmar. At the beginning of 1959, while writers Ji Kang and Gongpu were writing the script, director Wang Jiayi of Changchun Film Studio began to screen the location and actors of five golden flowers. In the provincial song and dance troupe, he was selected to play "five golden flowers". In 1960, at the second Asian African Film Festival held in Cairo, Egypt, "five golden flowers" won huge Awards: Director Wang Jiayi won the Silver Eagle Award for best director, and Yang Likun won the Silver Eagle Award for best actress. Egyptian President Nasser called on Yang Likun to go to Egypt in person to receive the prize. In 1964, Yang Likun starred in Ashima, a film made by Shanghai Film Studio and directed by Liu Qiong. During the "Cultural Revolution", Yang Likun was listed as the key target of criticism because of his two films "five golden flowers" and "Ashima". His spirit and body were severely damaged, resulting in mental disorder and long-term absence of treatment. In 1970, Yang Likun continued to be hospitalized in Changpo hospital because his condition worsened due to persecution. On August 24, 1972, Yang Likun was transferred to Hunan Chenzhou psychiatric hospital for treatment. On May 25, 1974, Yang Likun gave birth to twin sons. in 1982, five golden flowers won the best (Dance) golden film award in the third Santander music and dance film week in Spain. In the same year, Yang Likun was rated as one of the "top ten best actors in China". On July 21, 2000, Yang Likun died of illness at her home in Shanghai.

At the end of 1970, Tang Fenglou, who worked in Guangdong Fankou aluminum zinc mine, met Chen zetao, who had a good personal relationship with Yang family. Chen zetao proposed to introduce Yang Likun to Tang Fenglou. On May 22, 1973, after more than a year of correspondence, they got married.

On the afternoon of May 25, 1974, Yang Likun gave birth to twin sons Tang Yan and Tang Tao in the obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the District Central Hospital. In 1978, Yang was transferred to Shanghai film studio to reunite with her husband and son who had been separated for many years. On July 21, 2000, Yang Likun died of illness at her home in Shanghai. On January 15, 2001, half of Yang Likun's ashes were sent back to Yunnan for burial in the Jinbaoshan art garden in Kunming.

People's Memorial
Yang Likun's former residence was built in 1893 in Mohei town. It was the birthplace of Yang Likun and the residence of his childhood. Later, due to disrepair and serious damage, it was demolished and built as a post and telecommunications office in Mohei town. In May 2009, the CPC Ning'er County Committee and the county people's government decided to restore and rebuild Yang Likun's former residence according to its original historical appearance, which was successfully completed in October 2010. The former residence is "three rooms and one Zhaobi" courtyard, which is listed as a county-level cultural protection unit. In his former residence, there is an exhibition of Yang Likun's life and artistic achievements.
