Character evaluation
Tang Shuxuan expresses her unique thoughts on social reality, political history and interpersonal relations, her sympathy for human nature's struggle for survival in the predicament, and her ultimate despair for all seemingly beautiful phenomena, no matter whether she misappropriates the appearance and pattern of art or commercial films. Tang Shuxuan is also one of the few directors in the history of Chinese language films who have thought deeply about gender issues. His concern for sex politics is closely linked with his concern for social politics (review of film art). Tang Shuxuan is known as the pioneer of "new film" in Hong Kong and Taiwan. As a female director, Tang Shuxuan's works have general and common female themes and perspectives, but on the other hand, they also contain more profound human nature proposition. The former gives Tang Shuxuan a style different from that of ordinary film writers, while the latter makes her different from ordinary female directors. In the movie "Mrs. Dong", Tang Shuxuan uses the flashback technique of the movie to skillfully show on the big screen. She has "the unique and sharp delicacy of women", which makes the tragedy of "Mrs. Dong" under the oppression of human nature and system incisively and vividly expressed (review of audio visual).
