Gao lichen was a famous film director in early China. He was born in Zhuxi County, Hubei Province in September 1890. In 1911, during the revolution of 1911, he joined the student army, the vanguard of the northern expedition of the Shanghai army. From 1912 to 1913, he was an inspector of the Sinian daily in Hankou.

Profile

In 1913, Gao lichen joined the Qimin new drama club. In 1914, he joined the Greater China new drama society, which was formed by Zheng Zhengqiu and others. From 1914 to 1923, he has been engaged in the mobile performance activities of running wharf. In 1924, he entered Shanghai Zhonghua film school, the first school in China to train movie actors founded by Zeng Huantang and Hong Shen. At the same time, he also entered Hu Die, Xiao Ying, Xu Qinfang and Chen Yitang, who later became famous movie stars. In 1925, he became one of the founders of Tianyi company. In 1926, he joined the star film company and became both a director and an actor. He played an important role in master Feng and the couple. Later, he served as assistant director and deputy director respectively in little lover, 28 beauties, stone of blood and tears, resurrection of national soul, red tears on iron plate, flower of freedom and other films, and directed the tragedy of elder sister, oppression and other films. Influenced by progressive filmmakers, these films all reflect social problems. In 1934, Gao lichen returned to Tianyi. Director of the "deep spring in Red Mansions", "sewing beads", "hard struggle", "flowers and grass" and other films. In 1937, he edited and directed Yangliu village. In 1937, he came to Nanyang film company, a branch of Tianyi company in Hong Kong. In 1938, he adapted and directed the luminous cup, and then directed the female soldier. During the Anti Japanese War, Gao lichen took part in the patriotic activities of benefit performance and film making in Hong Kong. After liberation, he returned to Shanghai from Hong Kong and was employed by Shanghai Museum of culture and history in 1954. Here, he wrote a lot of historical materials about Shanghai Drama and film, such as "old story of Shanghai film industry" and "I know Tianyi company" and so on, contributing to China's drama and film industry.
