Wang Baoyu, born in Qingdao, Shandong Province in December 1962, was recruited into the army in July 1980 and joined the party in October 1984. After graduating from the aviation school, he was assigned to the first brigade of an air force division as a pilot.
Character experience
On the surface, Wang Baoyu is quiet, but thoughtful, and has a strong personality; usually he likes reading books, but also attaches great importance to accepting new things; he is good at studying flight theory, and his flying skills are above average; he has a strong self-esteem. He is suspicious, unsociable and has a general relationship with the masses. Therefore, for a long period of time when they were assigned to the army, they all took him as the key helper, so that he could integrate into the special group of combat forces as soon as possible. Gradually, Wang Baoyu adapted to the life of the combat forces, and was willing to communicate with you in general, but never open up to you. Therefore, it is difficult to really integrate with most of the forthright pilots. Sometimes he felt that some joking pilots were shallow, and even laughed at their lack of thought and mind. But we don't mind. We just think he's more bookish and never mind. Fortunately, Wang Baoyu is smart, has a strong ability of acceptance, and has made rapid progress in flight. Therefore, at this stage, he can often hear praise and appreciation from leaders and comrades in arms, which makes him feel superior. At the same time, he was satisfied with the vanity which was deeply buried in his heart. However, over time, everything has changed. Some of the pilots who were assigned to the army with him were promoted to the leading posts successively because of the rapid improvement of their comprehensive quality. However, he had high expectations of himself, but he didn't have his share in every promotion, which greatly hurt his self-esteem and gradually led to psychological imbalance. During this period, his family also had problems. In 1988, shortly after Wang Baoyu's marriage, he went through the formalities for his family members to join the army. However, at this time, the pace of reform and opening up was speeding up. The local government gradually broke the "big pot" system, and many surplus personnel began to be stripped. This brought great difficulties to the work placement of military cadres' family members. In this regard, he began to complain, speak strange words, vent dissatisfaction. Later, through organizational efforts, he finally arranged work for his wife in the headquarters. But because his wife is outgoing and sociable, he is not at ease living in two places. So he asked the old commander, who had been transferred to the post of deputy division commander, to be transferred to the flying regiment of the division headquarters. I thought the deputy division commander could give him some care, but I didn't expect that the strict deputy division commander criticized him seriously for thinking too much about personal problems. Soon after, the division promoted a group of flight squadron leaders and captains, and Wang Baoyu was not promoted again. Therefore, he thought that the deputy division commander obstructed him and retaliated against him. At the same time, the relationship between Wang Baoyu and his wife has become increasingly tense, and they often quarrel. His wife repeatedly taunted him for his incompetence and weakness, which made him even more disheartened.
Later, Wang Baoyu focused on her study. During this period, he read many Western philosophical works and some theories advocating western democracy and freedom. He began to yearn for western democracy and freedom, and even broke the relevant regulations and often eavesdropped on overseas broadcasts.
At first, Wang Baoyu paid attention to the change of his thoughts. In February 1989, the Political Department of the Communist Youth League listed Wang Baoyu as a key person in ideological work because of his inability to properly deal with the work of family members and his tense relationship with the leaders.
In addition to targeted ideological work, the regiment also tried to give Wang Baoyu more help and care in his work and life. The leaders of the Youth League created opportunities and conditions for Wang Baoyu to improve the relationship between husband and wife as much as possible. Taking advantage of his wife's opportunity to have a child in his hometown in Qingdao, they specially approved him to go to Qingdao sanatorium alone for recuperation and vacation for more than two months. In fact, this caused management to get out of control. Because this period of time is the time when the trend of liberalization is rampant throughout the country, which is also an important reason for the fundamental change of Wang Baoyu's political position.
However, with the gradual deepening of reform and opening up, the treatment of pilots is also constantly improving. In addition, the work placement and living problems of his family members have been basically solved. Wang Baoyu has also made new changes. He works hard and actively, and his usual complaints and complaints are less, his family relations have been eased, and the mass relations have become more harmonious. In May 1990, in view of his great progress, the leaders of the Communist Youth League removed the key persons in his ideological work. In fact, during this period, under the cover of "positive progress", Wang Baoyu has secretly prepared to fly away. He used the opportunity of training and exercises to carefully study the data, routes, weather and other information of airports in neighboring countries, and memorized the relevant data.
On August 25, Wang Baoyu finally found an opportunity to take advantage of flight training to implement flight defection. At this time, he had made up his mind to go to the western free world. Before boarding the plane, he gave his watch to the pilot who handed over the plane to him. Although they were old classmates of the aviation school, the pilot still felt a little strange. He thought that Wang Baoyu thought that wearing his watch was in the way and asked him to keep it for a while, so he didn't pay much attention to it. Later, Wang Baoyu turned to board the plane, took off immediately and set sail normally. After arriving at the scheduled airspace, he suddenly turned to leave the formation and flew straight to Vladivostok in the Far East of the Soviet Union at ultra-low altitude.
Extradition trial
At this time, as China and the Soviet Union had resumed normal relations, the two countries immediately started diplomatic procedures after the incident of Wang Baoyu's flight defection, in order to properly solve the problem as soon as possible through diplomatic channels.
On August 26, Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen and Soviet Foreign Minister Shevardnadze respectively went to Harbin for urgent consultations on the "August 25" incident. At that time, the Soviet Union was eager to improve its relations with China, and it just used this incident to show China its sincerity in restoring friendly relations. After negotiation, the two sides decided to deal with the incident in a low-key manner. The Soviet side actively supported and cooperated with the Chinese side on the issue of extradition of pilots, and the two sides soon reached an extradition agreement. According to the agreement, the Chinese side arranged a special plane to fly directly to the Soviet Union's kennevich military airport to extradite Wang Baoyu, while idling the defected J-6 plane home.
However, there are still problems in the details. The Soviet side believes that Wang Baoyu has raised the issue of political asylum, so the Soviet side should be responsible for the security issues before extradition, and Wang Baoyu should not be aware of it at all, and the Chinese side should not arrest Wang Baoyu in the territory of the Soviet Union. Finally, the two sides agreed that the formal handover should take the hatch of Chinese Tu 154 special plane as the boundary, and all affairs outside the hatch should be in the charge of the Soviet side, while those inside the hatch have nothing to do with the Soviet side.
In order to ensure the smooth extradition and handover, the Soviet side told Wang Baoyu that the relevant departments of the Soviet military are studying how to deal with his request for political asylum in the United States. Considering his special identity, he was inconvenient to stay in this base. In order to ensure his safety, he decided to give him another place to wait for news. Due to confidentiality, we need to blindfold him on the way to transfer. I hope he can understand. Wang Baoyu readily agreed.
However, due to Wang Baoyu's forced landing, the planned idling J-6 aircraft caused slight damage. One of the serious problems is that the deceleration plates on both sides can not be recovered normally, and the Soviet base is a bombing airport, which has neither repair capability nor flight support conditions. However, the Soviet side took advantage of the existing conditions of the airport to actively provide protection. In August in Vladivostok, although the weather is pleasant, Soviet personnel are still sweating in the open airport runway. As a result, our staff took out a case of Coca Cola from the special plane. A Soviet Colonel took the drink and did not know what it was. Our staff then found out that the colonel might not have seen this kind of canned drink, so they opened it for him and invited him to drink it. Perhaps it was the first time I tasted such a drink. The Soviet Colonel drank it with his thumb up, and even drank three cans at a time.
Later, our personnel simply took the spare drinks and some instant noodles and other food off the plane and gave them to the Soviet support personnel, which made them ecstatic. As a result, they did their best to provide protection for us, and even the fuel added to the aircraft was free of charge. Nevertheless, the J-6's speed brakes have not been repaired. But in no case can we leave our aircraft in the Soviet Union. Therefore, Zhan houshun, a deputy commander in charge of the idling task, made a decisive decision: to fly the J-6 aircraft with the speed reducer on to fly back to China. Even if you can't get to your destination. As a last resort, it has to be abandoned and left on its own land. Because it is not only related to the dignity of the Chinese air force, but also to the dignity of a sovereign state. In the end, the deputy head of the group flew the faulty plane and, with his excellent technology and indomitable will, safely turned it back to the motherland. After Wang Baoyu was extradited to China, he was immediately expelled from the party and military. Later, he was sentenced to death by the military court of the air force for the crime of betraying the motherland, suspended for two years, and deprived of political rights for life. Soon after, the air force, through this incident, drew inferences from one instance, educated the army, and formulated and improved various measures, thus fundamentally eliminating the occurrence of such problems. Therefore, this incident became the last flight defection since the founding of the people's Republic of China.
