Zheng Songmao was born in Henan in 1948. In 1960, he entered Fuyang art school in Anhui Province. After graduating in 1963, he was assigned to Anhui Quju troupe. He joined the army in 1968. In 1969, he was transferred to the "front line" Drama Company as an actor.
