The story of the characters
Wang Jun entered Peking University for undergraduate study in 1992 and graduated in 1997. He was recommended to study for a master's degree in artificial life at Peking University, and then continued to study for a doctor's degree at Peking University. As an undergraduate, he majored in computer and artificial intelligence. In the spring of 1999, when our country began to undertake 1% of human gene determination, there was an urgent need for compound talents with both biological background and computer proficiency. During his master's degree, Wang Jun was naturally sent to participate in the research of this work. Since then, he began to form an indissoluble bond with bioinformatics, and undertook part of the data analysis work in China in the human genome project. Then in 2001, he was responsible for the bioinformatics analysis part of China indica rice genome project. At the beginning of 2003, Professor Wang Jun, as one of the main participants in the early diagnosis of SARS, completed the genome decoding of four coronaviruses closely related to SARS in a short time. At the same time, scientific research on early diagnosis of SARS was carried out, and 300000 copies of "immunoassay kits" were sent to the first line of prevention and treatment of SARS free of charge at the fastest speed. In the struggle against SARS, he took up the important weapon of science and technology, stuck to the front line and made contributions to the prevention and control of SARS. Professor Wang Jun also organized and implemented the silkworm and pig genome project and chicken polymorphism mapping project, developed a number of software algorithms including assembly, comparison and annotation, and established a number of databases. The above scientific research achievements were published in "nature", "science", "nature review genetics", "PLoS Biology", "plantcell", "genome research", "Nuclear acids research" and other top magazines in the world.
From June 2007 to November 2008, Professor Wang Jun led the team to complete the first yellow human genome research project - "Yanhuang 1" in Shenzhen.
From 2009 to 2012, Professor Wang Jun led the scientific research team to successively complete a series of projects such as the international giant panda genome project, cucumber genome project and silkworm genome re sequencing project. At the same time, he put forward the concept of human "Pan genome", sequenced the ancient Eskimo genome in Greenland about 4000 years ago, and carried out the "human intestinal metagenome" in cooperation with the European Union These achievements are also published in nature and science.
After 2012, the major projects being organized and implemented are: "million omics project", "metabonomics level research project of metabolic diseases and other quantitative traits", "single gene and individual level cancer research project", "genomic polymorphism research of East Asian population", thousand species of animals and Plants Genome Project, thousand species of single gene disease genome project, "intestinal microbiological research project" "As well as a number of polymorphic maps and molecular breeding programs (including rice, silkworm and pig genomes), etc.
In 2013, he led the team to successfully acquire the US listed company: completegenomics.
On July 17, 2015, Wang Jun resigned as president of BGI Research Institute and CEO of BGI. The board of directors of BGI decided to support the establishment of a new business organization with artificial intelligence as the core and focusing on forward-looking business development led by Wang Jun.
On October 27, 2015, the start-up company "carbon cloud Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd." was officially established in Shenzhen.
Scientific achievements
Wang Jun has been engaged in the research of genomics and bioinformatics since he was a graduate student in 1999. Reference gene set of intestinal flora genome and its relationship with type II diabetes mellitus
abstract
The pathogenic factors of complex diseases include genetics, environment, diet and their interactions. Wang Jun and his team have carried out a lot of research work on the genetic factors of diseases from multiple omics levels by using the second generation sequencing technology, and achieved a series of results. The role of environment, diet and other factors in diseases has always been a world problem. Wang Jun and his team started with the human intestinal microbiota, which is closely related to human body. Through a series of work such as building research platform, developing bioinformatics algorithm, data processing and functional analysis, they constructed the world's first "reference gene set" of human intestinal microbiota, including more than 3 million genes and the polymorphism and similarity of different individual intestinal microbiota, and preliminarily explained the intestinal microbiota And human health. In order to further explain the relationship between complex diseases and intestinal flora, Wang Jun and his team took type II diabetes as the research object, initiated the method of "metagenomic association analysis" (mgwas) to compare diabetic patients with normal people, and first proposed and applied the concept of "metagenomic linkage group (MLG)" to clarify the relationship between type II diabetes and intestinal flora, and the relationship between patients and healthy people The differences of intestinal microbial composition in ordinary people, the biomarkers found provide a new method for the clinical treatment of type II diabetes in the future, and some of the findings are being further functional research, laying the foundation for the prevention and treatment of diabetes in the future. This study provides a new strategy for the functional prevention and treatment of other complex diseases at the level of intestinal flora. This achievement was awarded the "most influential research award" of the top ten diabetes researches in China in 2012.
