He has long been engaged in the teaching of genetics, cytogenetics, molecular cytogenetics, theories and methods of plant genetic improvement and the research on the theory and application of crop genetic improvement by using modern biotechnology. His main research direction is the genetic improvement of wheat crops by using modern biotechnology. The functional identification, transfer, gene mapping and molecular marker, molecular marker assisted breeding and genetic transformation of exogenous genes in wheat and its wild relatives were studied. Fifteen octoploid Triticum were bred, and the chromosomes or chromosome fragments carrying excellent genes of various wild relatives of wheat were transferred into wheat. A number of germplasm materials with important utilization value in wheat genetic improvement were selected, which enriched the germplasm resources of wheat breeding in China. A high-density molecular marker genetic map was constructed by using multiple wheat RIL populations. QTL mapping was carried out for wheat yield, quality, stress resistance and other related traits. The theory and method of wheat genetic improvement were studied, and a number of new wheat lines were bred. He has published more than 170 academic papers in academic journals at home and abroad, and edited or participated in the compilation of 7 monographs and textbooks. It has won one national "Eighth Five Year" science and technology major achievement award, two second prizes and one third prize of Shandong Province Science and technology progress award, one third prize of Ministry of agriculture science and technology progress award, one excellent innovation team award of Ministry of agriculture, one third prize of Shanxi Province Science and Technology Progress Award, and four national and Shandong Province teaching achievement awards.
