Born in New York, he grew up and received education in Hong Kong. In 1967, he returned to the United States to study violin at San Francisco State University. Later, he entered the Juilliard Conservatory of music to study conducting with moni. The next year, he made his debut with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, He made his debut in Europe at the International Youth Orchestra festival in abadian, Scotland in 1980. Since then, he has been frequently invited to perform in the festival. He has conducted St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Swiss Radio Orchestra, etc, He was the resident conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 1979 to 1985. Before that, he served as the conductor assistant of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra for two consecutive seasons. Zhen Jianhao often cooperated with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. He once conducted the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra and Springfield Symphony Orchestra
