Zhang Chi, male, born in September 1989, joined the army in December 2007. He is from Changling County, Jilin Province. He is a member of the Communist Party of China and has won the third class merit three times. He was the acting platoon leader of Sihu squadron of Jilin Baishan forest detachment. On August 16, 2013, in order to save the people in distress and comrades in arms, unfortunately, they were swept away by the flood and died in a heroic manner. They were only 24 years old. After searching day and night, on August 18, his body was found in the grass along the flooded river bank.

What happened

On August 15, 2013, Lushuihe Town, Fusong County, Baishan City, Jilin Province was suddenly hit by a torrential rain. In the early morning of the 16th, Lushuihe brigade of Baishan forest detachment of the armed police received an urgent call from the local government for help, and quickly mobilized 31 officers and men to rush for help. After arriving at the scene, Zhang Chi and his comrades quickly searched and rescued the trapped people. At 13:30, the water rose sharply near zhengyangqiao farmer's market in Lushuihe Town, and three residents who had no time to evacuate were trapped on the roof. Officers and soldiers with rubber boats rushed to the scene for rescue. Zhang Chi and Guo Taichun, with good water quality, rowed rubber boats to approach the houses where the trapped people lived under the leadership of Zhang Wenhai, head of Lushuihe town safety supervision station. Suddenly, a torrent from the street overturned the rubber boat and three people fell into the water. Zhang Chi pushes Guo Taichun to the shore, grabs Zhang Wenhai and tries to take him to a safe area. However, both he and Zhang Wenhai are engulfed by the flood because of the high waves and rapid water. In nearly nine hours of fighting, he led the rescue team to transfer, evacuate and rescue 52 people. At about 15:00 on the 18th, as the flood receded, armed police officers and soldiers, public security police and local people who searched for two days and two nights found Zhang Chi's body in xiaohewan near Yongqing forest farm in Lushuihe town.

To be a martyr

On the early morning of August 22, 2013, more than 1000 people from Lushuihe Town, Fusong County, Jilin Province and other places came to the local funeral home to spontaneously see off Zhang Chi, an armed police soldier who died in the flood relief. More than 100 taxi and private car drivers spontaneously joined the fleet. The long fleet could not see the end at a glance. The sound of sirens echoed over the town for a long time. at the scene of seeing him off, the people came to escort the hero on his last journey with an elegiac couplet with the words "martyr Zhang Chi has gone well all the way" and "always miss martyr Zhang Chi". Tears were in the eyes of the people seeing them off, and some of the people and their families rescued by Zhang Chi in the flood broke into tears. on August 19, 2013, the forest command of the armed police approved Comrade Zhang Chi as a martyr. He was buried in the cemetery of revolutionary martyrs in Fusong County.
