Li Xiao was born in Shanghai on July 17, 1967. In 1986, he was selected into the Chinese national youth team to participate in the Asian Youth Games; in 1987, he joined the Chinese national second team under the guidance of Xu Genbao to participate in the football match of the World University Games. In 1990, he was selected into the Chinese national training team for the first time. He took part in the Asian Cup in 1992 and scored one goal. In 1994, Li Xiaonian, a Chinese football player, took part in the Asian Games, scoring four goals and becoming the chief shooter of the national team. Also in 1994, the professional league began. In his first season, he scored 11 goals for Shanghai Shenhua team and tied for the third place in the list of top a shooters. But at the beginning of 1995, due to hepatitis, he faded out of the main position. In 1996, Li Xiao went to the Pudong team. In 1998, Li Xiao became the first Shanghai player to transfer to a foreign team. In 1998-1999, Li Xiao played for Wuhan red peach K team, contributing to the team's relegation.
