Xie Daoxiu
Xie Daoxiu (February 25, 1940 to February 20, 2019), male, Han nationality, was born in Zhouxi village, Meixian District, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. The second batch of national intangible cultural heritage project Guqin art (Lingnan School) representative inheritors. He is the contemporary master of Lingnan Guqin art and the eighth generation successor of Lingnan School.
On the evening of February 20, 2019, Xie Daoxiu died at the age of 79.

Xie Daoxiu, the inheritor of Lingnan Guqin art, is a national intangible cultural heritage. In July 1963, after graduating from the Guqin Department of Guangzhou Conservatory of music, Xie Daoxiu was engaged in music education in Guangzhou No.5 Middle School, and has been committed to the research and teaching of Lingnan Guqin. After the "Cultural Revolution", he followed the famous Lingnan Guqin Master Mr. Yang Xinlun to actively promote the Guqin art research in Guangdong. In October 1980, with the support of Guangdong Musicians Association, Guangdong Guqin Research Association was established, with Yang Xinlun as president, Mo Shangde as vice president and Xie Daoxiu as secretary general. Xie Daoxiu, as the eighth generation descendant of Lingnan School, has been striving to inherit and develop the Guqin art of Lingnan School all his life, aiming to carry forward the Guqin art of Lingnan School. In 1975, he and his teacher, Mr. Yang Xinlun, began to reorganize and record the Lingnan Qin music gugang Yipu, and compiled and printed it into a volume, so as to spread it and make score for Shuanghe Tingquan and shenhuayin. With decades of pursuit and love for Lingnan Guqin art, through the collection, research, performance display and foreign exchange of Qin music and Qin style, a new generation of Lingnan Guqin Lovers has been cultivated. The number of them has grown from a few at the beginning to more than 200. Among them, a new generation of disciples such as Chen Lei, Xie Dongxiao and Tang Chang have been able to play their own roles. Xie Daoxiu has led his disciples to hold Guqin concerts in Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and other places for many times, making positive contributions to the inheritance and promotion of Guqin.
He was born in Zhouxi village, Meixian District, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province on February 25, 1940. He was influenced by Hakka culture since he was a child, and especially loved folk music forms such as Hakka folk songs and noisy eight tones. Five years old can beat Hakka gongs and drums.
On August 2, 1953, he moved to Guangzhou with his parents and went to Guangzhou No.17 middle school. He spent 50 cents to buy a Jinghu on the street for self-study. Later, he learned erhu, Yangqin, dizi and other national musical instruments. He was the main force of the school's national band at that time.
In August 1960, he was admitted to the Guqin major of the Department of folk music of Guangzhou Conservatory of music. He began his Guqin career for decades after learning from the famous Lingnan Guqin Master Mr. Yang Xinlun.
In October 1960, Guan Shanyue, a piano and Flute Ensemble in cooperation with golden city, was broadcast live on Guangdong TV station for the first time, and participated in guqin music appreciation meetings held by Guangdong Branch of China Musicians Association for many times. Together with Mr. Yang Xinlun, Guan Qingyao, teachers and students, they played "Q & A of fishermen and woodcutters" and participated in the 1st Yangcheng music fair and the National Concert of Guangzhou music college.
In 1975, the "ten years of turmoil" was coming to an end, and guqin, which was regarded as the typical representative of fengzixiu, was "liberated". He spent all his savings of 40 yuan to buy a "Liuquan" Guqin of Ming Dynasty, which had been abandoned for more than ten years. Under the instruction and guidance of Mr. Yang Xinlun, he recompiled the teaching materials, sorted out the gugang genealogy, accepted Gao Yusheng, the first disciple, and transferred him to guqin major of Guangzhou (Xingjiao) Conservatory of music, becoming the second generation of Guqin major students in professional colleges.
On October 24, 1950, with the support of Guangdong music association, Guangdong Guqin Research Association was established together with Mr. Yang Xinlun and Mr. Mo Shangde. As the secretary general, Xie Daoxiu undertook all the daily work of guqin, such as organizing regular gatherings and exchanging experience of Guqin. In the mid and late 1980s, Wu cuiqun, Chen Lei and Chen Ruiming joined the ranks of Guqin learners. Later, more than 100 people studied Lingnan guqin, and some came all the way from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Guqin students Gao Yusheng, Wu cuiqun, Xie Dongxiao, Li Jieting and Lin Minjun all won prizes in the national Guqin competition.
On August 2, 1982, xieliu Spring Festival was broadcast on CCTV.
In April 1983, he went to Beijing to participate in the second national Guqin score making conference. The Guqin and Xiao ensemble Bijian Liuquan, which cooperated with Shanghai zither player Dai Shuhong, was selected as an excellent program to perform in the auditorium of the National Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference. Gong Yi, Ma Yutao, Jiang Jiaqiang and other famous artists performed on the same stage. The program was also recorded and produced by the Central People's broadcasting station and broadcast on the FM channel.
On February 1, 1990, when Mr. Yang Xinlun passed away, Xie Daoxiu took over the post of president of Guangdong Guqin Research Association, putting a heavier burden on him.
On October 21, 1993, in order to commemorate the 95th anniversary of Mr. Yang Xinlun's birthday, a "Guqin concert between teachers and students Xie Daoxiu" was held in Guangdong mass art museum. In October 1998, the Guqin concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yang Xinlun's birth was held in the conference hall of Jiangnan Hotel. In 2004, the "Guqin concert to celebrate the inclusion of Chinese Guqin in the world heritage and to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Yang Xinlun" was held in hongxiannv Art Center. The above three concerts all brought great social impact, and many media reported in turn.
In April 1994, he went to Beijing to participate in the "gathering of famous Qin, famous music and famous artists". In October of the same year, he and Li Mingzhong went to Hong Kong to hold a Guqin solo concert at the Hong Kong City Hall, where he played the famous Lingnan Qin music, such as "the gull forgets the opportunity", "shenhuayin", "Bijian Liuquan" and "Wu Yeti". In order to spread Lingnan guqin, we have traveled all over the country for more than ten years.
In 1995, the first solo CD "Guqin dream" was released. In 1997, the Guqin album "Bijian Liuquan" was published by Taiwan renshijie record company. In addition, a number of released Guqin albums included Xie Daoxiu's music.
In August 2005, he participated in CCTV Guqin program recording in Beijing, Qingdao and other places, playing Bijian Liuquan, shuidongyou and shenhuayin. In the past 20 years, the central government, Guangdong, Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Wuxi, Dongguan, Hong Kong, Singapore and other media have made interviews and special reports.
On September 15, 2005, the Guqin class of the Department of philosophy of Sun Yat sen University, taught by Xie Daoxiu, opened with more than 10 students, including Professor Luo Junyun, head of the Department, and Associate Professor Feng Huanzhen. Lingnan Guqin was first introduced into colleges and universities. As early as two years ago, the Dafosi temple in Yuexiu District also opened Guqin classes. Every time there is a grand festival, the Dafosi Sanskrit orchestra has Guqin festival performances.

Guqin, which is listed as the "world cultural heritage", is a tool for Chinese scholars to cultivate themselves, but it has few bosom friends because of its ancient pitch. In the early 1990s, there was a saying that there were less than 2000 people who could play Guqin all over the world. At that time, there were nearly 100 Lingnan disciples who were taught by Xie Daoxiu.
