Synopsis

The story of the play begins in 1956 when new China is in full swing. Wenli (Jiang Wenli), a young and beautiful math teacher in primary school, and Tong Zhi (Zhang Guoli), a young model technician in heavy machinery factory, are married. When they were young, they were a pair of happy enemies. Their personalities and living habits were out of place. They became parents early and gave birth to four children in a row in order to have a son. In marriage life, there are contradictions everywhere from basic necessities of life to children's education to mother-in-law daughter-in-law relationship and then to sexual relationship. When they are middle-aged, they enter into a period of marriage fatigue. There is less and less communication between husband and wife, and they often fall into a more dangerous cold war. The relationship between husband and wife changes from indifference to cold war to fighting, and the marriage seems to come to an end. When they passed away, their love for each other was not strong, and their marriage was not strong.

Behind the scenes

Due to the long time span of the play, the actors have to play from their 20s to their 70s, and Jiang Wenli specially lost more than 20 pounds. ● due to the large time span of the play, director Zheng Xiaolong requires all scenes and details to restore life to the maximum extent. In order to present the original characteristics of each era, the costume and props Department has tried every means to collect a large number of costumes and daily necessities from the folk since the start of the play. According to props Master Wang yu'e, there are tens of thousands of props used in the play. Newspapers alone produce 100 pieces of props every year, and the hostess has more than 120 beautiful clothes.
