Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, also known as Chongwu, Duanwu and PuJie, which is on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Duan has the meaning of "Chu", so it is called Duanwu. Jianyin in the first month of the summer (lunar) calendar, according to the order of dizhi, may happens to be the noon moon. In addition, the ancients often called the fifth day the noon day, so Duanwu is also called Chongwu. The Dragon Boat Festival is spread all over the country, mainly distributed in the vast Han areas, and also celebrated by Zhuang, Buyi, Dong, Tujia, Gelao and other ethnic minorities.
There are many legends about the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival, such as commemorating Qu Yuan's throwing into the river, the taboo that began on May 5, Goujian, king of Yue, training the Navy, commemorating Wu Zixu's throwing into the Qiantang River and Cao E's saving his father, etc.
The main activities of the Dragon Boat Festival include: 1. Commemorating historical figures; 2. Rowing dragon boats; 3. Eating zongzi; 4. Various techniques for preventing five poisons (paper cutting by sticking Dragon Boat symbol, hanging wormwood and calamus, wearing sachets and other evil things, bathing in blue soup); 5.
