Brief introduction of Jiaxing stove painting:
Applicant: Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province
Stove painting, also known as "stove painting" and "stove mural", refers to all kinds of auspicious patterns and writing patterns painted on rural firewood stoves by folk artists with soot, watercolor and toner pigments. It is a typical local art in Jiangnan. Jiaxing's stove painting has its own unique style, which has influenced the related art styles of Hangzhou, Huzhou, Shaoxing, Jinshan and Fengjing in Shanghai, Wujiang and Rudong in Jiangsu.
In rural areas of Jiaxing, the habit of using firewood stoves is still retained. When farmers build a new house, they must build a new stove in the kitchen. The stove must be built with green bricks, paper bars and lime on the day chosen by the master. The stove paintings on the stove are also painted by the Masons. For a long time, stove painting has been regarded as a folk art which is not elegant, and there are few literature records. However, judging from the inheritance history of Zhao Xiangsong, the eighth generation descendant of Jiaxing stove painting family, Jiaxing stove painting had been handed down at least in the middle of Qing Dynasty. Jiaxing stove painting has a broad mass base. Before the 1980s, there were 1112 villages in Jiaxing, and each village had 2-3 stove painting artists (masons). They were born and bred in the countryside, and their skills were handed down from father to son and taught by teachers and apprentices.
Jiaxing stove painting is based on the stove as the carrier. Folk artists draw on the stove wall of about 3 square meters and shape it according to the stove. They usually combine multiple pictures into one stove to make it more colorful. The drawing must be carried out when the kitchen wall is half dry and half wet. Generally, Baijiu liquor is used to modulate pigment, and its shape is mainly black line, and it is red, blue, white, black and so on. Its themes and contents are mostly rich grain, prosperous six animals, more than happy, peaches and plums all over the sky and so on, coupled with the auspicious words of fortune, fortune, longevity and happiness, reflecting the local people's aesthetic concept and life interest.
Nowadays, with the evolution of rural lifestyle, rural stoves and stoves are mostly made of cement tiles, and no longer paint stoves. At the same time, the older generation of stoves artists have died one after another, and the number of folk artists engaged in stoves painting is decreasing. The development of Jiaxing stoves painting is facing a serious crisis, and effective measures need to be taken to protect it.
