Introduction to stone carving (Daye stone carving)
Applicant: Daye City, Hubei Province
Stone carving, also known as "stone carving", is a traditional hand carving technique with stone as raw material. China's stone carving art has a long history. It has been carried on for thousands of years and has been handed down to the present day. It shows the exquisite technology, ingenious conception and abundant creativity of traditional folk crafts. Stone carving is usually created on natural stone materials such as marble, granite, bluestone and sandstone. In this process, a series of skilled folk carving techniques such as round carving, relief carving, openwork carving and line carving are used. Because these stone materials are natural and can be preserved for a long time, stone carving techniques are mostly used to make large-scale sculptures and decorative sculptures. According to the use, stone carving products can be divided into three categories: first, building components and decorations, such as platform base, memorial archway, stone lion, etc.; second, god Buddha statues, such as the statues of Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province and Longmen Grottoes in Henan Province; third, daily necessities, such as desk ornaments and inkstones, which can be appreciated and used. Traditional stone carving used axes, hammers and chisels as tools. In modern times, some more advanced tools such as glycerine powder and simple machinery were used. With the development of society, the stone carving technology is improving day by day. As a unique commodity, the related products are widely circulated in the market and have unique artistic charm.
Daye stone carving is a unique folk stone carving art in yinjieyuan village, Baoan Town, Daye City, Hubei Province. According to Yin's genealogy, in the Tang Dynasty, Yin's ancestors moved from Tianshui, Gansu Province to Ruichang, Jiangxi Province, and then moved back to Daye. They settled down in yinjieyuan village and lived by quarrying and carving. The history of Daye stone carving began at this time. Stone carving skills have been inherited from generation to generation in yinjieyuan village, from the generation of "Guo" to the generation of "Cheng". With one hammer and one chisel, these stone carvings left a large number of art treasures among the people. Yin Guangde, a Qing Dynasty artist, carved the relief "Yu Qiao Geng Du", which is treasured in Yin Jieyuan village. This work takes the scenery of Jiangnan as the theme. It is ingenious in design, neat in composition and exquisite in carving. It has a strong sense of depth and space. It is full of decorative interest and shows the basic characteristics of Daye stone carving. Daye stone carvings, represented by yinjieyuan village, can be used to produce various types of products for production, construction, decoration, commemoration, belief and so on, most of which are steles and stone lions. At present, under the impact of the modern market economy, Daye stone carving's living space is shrinking day by day, its development is difficult, its prospect is worrying, and it is in urgent need of protection and support.
