Zhang Caisu, a clay figurine in Tianjin, is a popular folk art. It was founded in Daoguang period of Qing Dynasty, and has a history of 180 years.
Zhang Mingshan is the founder of clay figurine Zhang. He got his stage name "clay figurine Zhang" at the age of 18. He runs a clay sculpture workshop in the form of a family. He is "highly skilled, tentacle imaging". In 1915, Zhang Mingshan won the first prize of Panama world expo for his work, and Zhang Yuting won the honor prize of Panama world expo. Later, Zhang Yuting, Zhang Jingfu, Zhang Jingxi, Zhang Jinghu, Zhang Ming and other four generations passed on, and became the representative of clay sculpture art in northern China.
After 1949, the people's government adopted the policy of protection, support and development for clay figurine Zhang's painted sculpture, and arranged several generations of Zhang's artists to work in the departments of literary creation and teaching. Zhang Yuting, the second generation's successor, was employed as the director of Tianjin Municipal Museum of culture and history. At the same time, folk painted sculpture art entered the university hall. Zhang Jinghu, the third generation's successor, was employed as a teacher in the Central Academy of fine arts and the Central Academy of Arts We have established clay figurine painting studio, recruited five groups of students, and trained a large number of painting art professionals for our country. Zhang Ming, the fourth generation's successor, has devoted himself to teaching in his studio and teaching work for more than 20 years. From then on, the art of clay figurine Zhang moved from family workshop to society. Guo Moruo once wrote an inscription: "yesterday, there was only one family, but now the world is full of peaches and plums."
In the early 1960s, clay figurine painting studio Zhang went to Beijing twice to hold special exhibitions of excellent clay figurine painting works. In that year, Premier Zhou Enlai appointed Deng Yingchao and Chen Yi to preside over the opening ceremony of the exhibition at the China Art Museum.

Zhang Mingshan and his son have made great contributions to the development of Chinese clay sculpture from Buddhist temple to common people's home, and they can be called the masters of modern clay sculpture art in China.
