Hangzhou Pingci, commonly known as "Xiaoshu", once had the name of "document". It evolved from Tanci in Ming Dynasty and spread in Hangzhou and its surrounding areas.

The performance of Hangzhou commentary is mainly based on narration. The singers play erhu accompaniment by themselves. They use Hangzhou dialect to rap and sing. Sometimes, they express the scenes in the story by singing Book kisses and narrate and comment. Sometimes, they speak for the people in the book. At the same time, they portray the characters with the help of posture, expression, action, Xingmu, folding fan, handkerchief and other props. One person multi angle, jump in and jump out, flexible. The singing style of Hangzhou commentary belongs to banqiang style. When singing, we should pay attention to correct words and round tune. The basic tune is called "pingdiao", which can be divided into "Xidiao", "nudiao" and "beidiao". Libretto pay attention to every double rhyme, easy to understand style, more use of seven character sentences, which also mixed with a small number of three or five character sentences, and sometimes add lining words in the sentence.

The repertoire of Hangzhou Pingci can be divided into two categories: one is a short aria called "Poems of the Tang Dynasty", also known as "the beginning", all of which are sung in seven character verses, such as Hanxin Wenbu, old fisherman by the river, ten sceneries of the West Lake, romance of the west chamber, etc.; the other is a traditional long bibliography called "Zhengshu", one of which can be sung for one to two months, "shuangzhufeng" and "Pearl Tower" More than 40 books, such as "the six beauties", "the legend of the White Snake" and "the legend of the green snake", are his representative works. The stories of the White Snake and the green snake mainly take place in Hangzhou. The plots and details in the books fully show the regional characteristics of Hangzhou, which is quite different from other music and drama works with the same theme.

At present, the cast of Hangzhou commentary is seriously aging and lack of successors, which is in urgent need of protection and inheritance.
