Gushan Town
Gushan town belongs to Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province. It is the hometown of red beans. Gushan town is named after the mountain and is located at the junction of Jiangyin, Wuxi, Changshu and Zhangjiagang. Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge in the west, Zhangjiagang port in the north, Huning Expressway in the South and Shanghai in the East are the transportation hubs of Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou. Gu Shan town is located in the eastern part of Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, with an area of 49.71 square kilometers, of which 1010 hectares of water surface and 85 thousand and 900 registered residence population (2017). In September 1958, the people's commune was established and renamed Gushan people's commune. In April 1984, the government and society were separated and renamed Gushan township. The legend of Gushan town and Hongdou
GUSHAN, located at the junction of Wuxi, Changshu, Jiangyin and Zhangjiagang, belongs to Jiangyin. It was an ancient town formed in the Southern Song Dynasty. Gu mountain is more than 50 meters high and looks like a squatting cat. There are 16 ancient beacon towers on the mountain, Xiangshan temple and Tianxiang Pavilion. Six or seven miles northeast of Gushan, there are red bean trees.
History of red bean tree in Gushan
GUSHAN red bean tree is said to be planted by Prince Zhaoming of Liang Dynasty. Xiao Tong (501-503), the prince of Zhaoming, was the son of Xiao Yan, the emperor of Liang Hu. He loved literature and edited Zhaoming Wenxuan in the Wenxuan building of Guanyin courtyard of Xiangshan temple in Gushan. There are still some broken steles of yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties in tianxiangge site, among which there are the steles of rebuilding Gushan wenxuanlou in the fourth year of Qianlong reign of Qing Dynasty and the steles of rebuilding Prince Zhaoming's reading tower in the fourth year of Qianlong reign of Qing Dynasty. It is also said that the site of Hongdou tree used to be an nunnery. In the Northern Song Dynasty, a monk moved this Hongdou tree from other places. From then on, the nunnery was called Hongdou nunnery, and the village was called Hongdou village. According to Jiangyin county annals, the tree was once withered in the Yuan Dynasty, and recovered to shade in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. In the sixth year of Xianfeng, there was a severe drought, and the tree bore many fruits. In 1918, Xu Jiuyong wrote Gu Shan's visit to Hongdou tree, and in 1934, Wu Yisheng wrote Gu Shan's Hongdou tree.

The trunk of the old tree has been rotten, and the trunk with a diameter of about 1 meter can still be seen. The existing trees with luxuriant green leaves, blooming and bearing seeds may be the two branches regenerated after Qianlong of Qing Dynasty. The tree is 10 meters high, 50 meters around the crown shade, 1.23 meters around the waist of the South Branch, 2.90 meters around the root of the North Branch, with three branches on the top, 1.17 meters around the waist, 1.85 meters around the waist and 1.50 meters around the waist. 2 meters south of Dashu, a new branch was born in 1982, 0.7 meters high. In 1983, a new branch with a height of 0.45 meters was born. These two new branches are the continuous branches of the big tree. According to the investigation, the red bean tree once had seeds in 1937, and it also had flowers and seeds once in 1956. From 1975 to 1985, it had flowers and seeds four times, among which the highest was in 1983, with 1600 red beans picked, and only 7 in 1985. This red bean tree germinates on May 1 and blooms on May 13-20 every year. Autumn is ripe and picked in October. Its leaves are like locust, its pods are like beans, its size is like Euryale ferox, its shape is like atrium, its color is bright red and purplish. The ancients thought that the symbol of Acacia, so it was called "Acacia son". In 1982, Jiangyin county government built walls around the red bean tree and built the red bean courtyard, which is 18.16 meters long from north to south, 15.66 meters wide from east to west and covers an area of 270 square meters. There is an east-west corridor with four glass cabinets on the wall of the corridor, displaying hongdouzi and poems written by celebrities for hongdoushu.
