Dai nationality has a long history. Ailao state was established in the west of Yunnan Plateau in the 5th century BC. According to the Chinese historical records, the Dai ancestors are successively called "ailaoyi", "Shan people", "nanzhaoman (mangman)", "Bo people (baiyiman)", "Bai people (jintoothed Baiyi)", "Baiyi", "Boyi" and "Paiyi". They call themselves "Dai". After the founding of the people's Republic of China, it was officially named "Dai nationality" according to the wishes of its own people.
The Jingpo nationality originated from the Diqiang tribe on the kangzang plateau in ancient China, and then moved southward along the Jinsha River and Nujiang River to Dehong, Yunnan and other mountainous areas. In 1942, the Jingpo people moved to live in today's Wanding district. The rest are scattered in each village group farm and urban area.
During the Han and Jin Dynasties (206 B.C. - 420 A.D.), the "Pu people" living in Dehong today were the ancestors of De'ang and other nationalities. The De'ang Nationality, originally known as the Banglong nationality, claimed to be divided into such branches as "Bulei", "Shaomai" and "raojing". In September 1985, according to the wishes of the people of this nationality, it was renamed the De'ang Nationality with the approval of the State Council. Most of the De'ang people in Wanding are "Shaomai".
