"Zhaxi" is a variant of "Zhaxi" in Yi language, which means Haizi with dense forest around it;

The origin of the name
There are three origins and meanings of its name: first, "Zhaxi" is a variant of "Zhaxi" in Yi language, which means Haizi with dense forest around it; second, "Zhaxi" means garrison; and "Xi" means West, which means that a Miao Nationality in Guizhou moves to garrison on a mountain, and zhaxibazi is located in the west of the mountain, so it is named; third, "Zhaxi" means "Zexi" in Yi language“ "Zhexi" or "zhaixi" means the location of the warehouse.

In March 2001, Zhaxi office was changed into Zhaxi residents committee, which has jurisdiction over seven residents groups.
From October 2002 to January 2003, urban residents' autonomy was implemented. Zhaxi neighborhood committee was abolished and 12 residents' groups were set up in Longjing, Yudong, Haizi and Qilin communities.
In April 2006, the former Shikan Township and the former Zhaxi town were merged into the present Zhaxi town. After the merger, there are 386 villager groups and 12 resident groups in 19 villages, including Xiaoba, Shilong, yujingshan, Guihua, Guanyin, Tianba, miaoba, Zhaling, Ganhe, Changdi, Mohei, Xiangzi, Longli, Dahe, Luoni, Yuanzi, Dashan, Hekou and Shikan. The total land area of the town is 337.6 square kilometers, with 71988 mu of cultivated land and 242625 mu of forest land The paddy field covers an area of 931 mu.
In April 2007, five villagers' groups in Guanyin village of Zhaxi Town, including laomuzhai, zhaimenkou, qilinao, Cangtou and Wenjiagou, and three villagers' groups in Xiangzi village, including Batou, chalayuan and tianbatou, were transferred to non-agricultural Hukou due to land expropriation. Eight villagers' groups were changed into eight residents' groups with the approval of the county people's government and were transferred to Qilin community for management. After the reform, there were 20 resident groups in 4 urban communities.
By the end of 2013, Zhaxi town had 387 villager groups in 19 villages including Xiaoba, Shilong, yujingshan, Guihua, Guanyin, Tianba, miaoba, Zhaling, Ganhe, Changdi, Mohei, Xiangzi, Longli, Dahe, Luoni, Yuanzi, Dashan, Hekou and Shikan, and 20 resident groups in 4 urban communities including Qilin, Longjing, Yudong and Haizi.

The registered residence has a total population of 125483, of which 61036 are women and 11618 are ethnic minorities (10775 of whom are Miao). The maximum distance from east to west is 28.1 km, and the maximum distance from north to south is 18.2 km, with a total area of 337.6 square kilometers. The terrain is high in the north and low in the south, with undulating terrain, crisscross mountains and complex terrain. The highest peak is dazuliangzi in the back mountain of Yanjiao villager group of Guanyin village, with an altitude of 1884 meters; the lowest point is a bowl of water from dajingjing group of Hekou village, with an altitude of 800 meters.

The natural resources in the town include forest, coal, limestone, copper, iron, potash and so on, especially wood and coal. The forest area is 16200 hectares, and the forest coverage rate is 47.8%. There are three state-owned forest farms, such as tu'erwan, da'nanmu and Houshan, and the timber storage is about 482000 cubic meters. The proven anthracite reserves are 44 million tons, most of which are yet to be developed.
