The township governs 7 villages and 52 villager groups, with a population of 6571 (2017), cultivated land of 8641 Mu and barren hills of 80000 mu. Before liberation, the township had no township system, belonging to the third, fourth, fifth and sixth guarantees of Yanmen township. After liberation, the township was built in 1950, named Jingyuan Township, which got its name from the township government's residence in Jingjia courtyard.
In December 2019, with the approval of Mianyang Municipal People's government, Jingyuan township was abolished and its administrative area was put under the jurisdiction of Yanmen Town, which is located at 116 Qingjiang street.
