Puqian Town, under the jurisdiction of Wenchang City, Hainan Province, is located in the northeast of Wenchang City. The total area is 134.7 km. Puqian town has a tropical monsoon climate with distinct dry and wet seasons. As of October 2019, Puqian town has 1 community and 11 administrative villages. In 1605, Puqian town went to the present site. It has mangroves, undersea villages, beaches, sunshine, mountains and other tourism resources.

Evolution of organizational system

In the autumn of the fifth year of Yuanding (112BC), Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty sent 100000 soldiers to fight against Nanyue. In the sixth year of Yuanding (111bc), Nanyue was pacified, and daner and zhuya counties were set up on Hainan Island, leading 16 counties. Puqian area belongs to ZiBei county (now Wenchang City).

In the 33rd year of Jiajing reign of Ming Dynasty (1554), an earthen city was built here, and later it was changed into a stone city.

The former site of puqianxu is located in Pumen, Xinbu. In 1605, it was moved after the earthquake in northern Hainan.

In 1717, in the 56th year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, a fort was built by the sea to the west of Beishan village, under the jurisdiction of Haikou Navy.

Puqian town is located in the northeast corner of Wenchang City, Hainan Province. It is adjacent to Qiongzhou Strait in the north and faces Leizhou Peninsula across the sea. The town faces the sea in the north, East and West, and its outline is like a peninsula. The town has a land area of 134.7 km and a coastline of 38 km.

The terrain of Puqian town is high in the northwest and low in the southeast. In the north, it is a low hilly land with an altitude of 30 meters, and huweiling is 56 meters above sea level, facing the water gate; Qixingling is 117.4 meters above sea level, and the Qiongzhou Strait is a significant landmark; in the south, it is an alluvial plain with a flat terrain and an altitude of 10 meters.

It is located in the coastal plain platform semi humid, mild cold damage and severe wind damage climate zone in the northeast of Hainan Province. The annual average temperature is 23-24 ℃, the minimum temperature is about 17 ℃ in January, and the maximum temperature is 28 ℃ in July. The annual rainfall is 1600-1800 mm, with distinct dry and wet seasons. The rainy season is from April to October. The rainfall in rainy season accounts for 87% of the whole year. During the rainy season, the monthly rainfall is more than 100 mm. In rainy August and September, the rainfall is about 300 mm. The typhoon landing in the northeast of Hainan Island has a significant impact on Puqian Town, the wind force is generally 8-9, and the maximum wind force can reach 12 or more. The dominant wind direction is northeast.

The main rivers in Puqian town are Zhuxi River, which originates from paishanliang village in Wengtian, flows through Dongpo, Lingdou, Huangpo, Longnan, Jixing and other areas, and flows into Puqian port to go to sea.

In Puqian Town, there are Longfeng reservoir, which is a small (first) type reservoir, and five small (second) type reservoirs, including Nanqiao reservoir, Chenghou reservoir, Hushi reservoir, dalingxi reservoir and Dongpo reservoir.

The normal storage capacity of the reservoir is 5.14 million cubic meters, the rainfall collection area is 6.5 square kilometers, and the average annual water volume for many years is about 4.55 million cubic meters. The designed irrigation area of the reservoir is 4700 mu, and the agricultural irrigation water consumption is about 3 million cubic meters. Zhuxi River flows into Dongzhaigang bay along the southern border of Puqian town. It is the largest river in the north of Wenchang City, with a drainage area of 379.8 square kilometers, an average annual runoff of 286 million cubic meters and an average flow of 9.07 cubic meters. In the dry season, the flow is about 2 m3 / s, and the river is abundant; there are 5 small (second) type reservoirs with water storage of 1.845 million cubic meters; there are 37 ponds; and there are 22 electric irrigation stations.

There is a magnetite deposit in Meiliu village, Puqian Town, with a reserve of about 2.52 million tons. The ore products are massive and small granular, with the quality of small granular as the best, with an average grade of 65%. From Jinshan tidal flat aquatic station to the coastline of mulantou, Puqian Town, the titanium reserves are 17000 tons, and the zircon reserves are 15000 tons. The No.5 ore body is mainly distributed in Qixingling area, Puqian Town, with a reserve of 85000 tons of titanium and 23000 tons of zircon.

The origin of place names

In the Ming Dynasty, Puqian port had been developed and utilized. It was a good natural port. At that time, most of the residents moved from Putian, Fujian Province. In order to commemorate Putian's native land, they chose Chinese homonym, which was initially named "Putian" and later changed to "Puqian".

Some people also think that the place names of Puqian coastal areas are mostly named after the landform and the folk names of the ferry, such as Hougang and Xikou. There was no village at that time, but only one or two shops. Therefore, the common people used to call this ferry "Puqian".
