It is said that Wuqiao is inhabited by Wu, Li and Lu families, and most of them live by farming. Because of traffic difficulties, they needed to build bridges. Li and Lu had no money to build bridges, so the Wu family was solely responsible for the cost, so they decided to build wujiaqiao. After liberation, it was called Wuqiao for short.

The town people's government is located in Tongyang North Road, Wuqiao. It is adjacent to Guocun town in the East, Daqiao town in the south, Putou town in the southwest, Baita River in the West and laotongyang canal in the north. It governs 15 administrative villages including Xiaodang, Liqiao, Honghe, Jinyang, evolvable, Shiyuan, Xiaoyuan, Lumiao, Changzhuang, Gaoyang, Jiliu, Wanshou, Wanghe, Wuzhuang and Baota, and 2 communities including Xiqiao and Xieqiao.

On June 16, Xieqiao township was separated from Wuqiao district. On April 27, 2000, Xieqiao and Wuqiao were merged into new Wuqiao town.
