Idiom story
In the spring and Autumn period, Jin, a powerful country in the Central Plains, planned to attack Qi. In order to explore the situation of Qi, fan Zhao, a senior official of Jin pinggong, sent an envoy to Qi. The grand banquet of qijinggong entertains fan Zhao. During the dinner, when everyone was drunk, fan Zhao said to Qi Jinggong: "king, please give me a drink." Qi Jinggong said to the people around him, "pour the wine into my glass and take it." Fan Zhao took it and drank it down. When Yan Ying saw it, he sternly ordered his courtiers to say, "throw away this wine glass and give the king another one." According to the etiquette at that time, at the banquet, the king and the minister used their own wine cups. Fan Zhao's deliberate violation of etiquette is to test the reaction of the monarchs and ministers of Qi, but Yan Ying finds out. Fan Zhao reported to the Duke of Jin Ping after he returned home: "now is not the best time to attack the state of Qi. I tested the reaction of the monarchs and ministers of Qi, and Yan Ying found out." Fan Zhao thinks that Qi has such a good official, so to fight like this, there is absolutely no certainty of victory. This is the origin of the allusion to compromise. Confucius praised Yan Ying's diplomacy and said, "you can't get out of the bottle and go thousands of miles away."
