Idiom story
In the 17th year of Jian'an (212), in the first month of the year, shortly after Ma Chao's defeat in the battle of Tongguan, he quickly annexed the counties in Longshang (Longxi, Nan'an, Hanyang, yongyang, etc.), and Zhang Lu also sent Yang ang, a general, to help Ma Chao. He gathered more than 10000 people to besiege Liangzhou governor Wei Kang in Jicheng. In May, Cao Cao arrested the machao people in Yecheng (including his father, Ma Teng, his second younger brother, Ma Xiu, Ma tie, etc.) and killed them all. On the other hand, he sent the western expedition troops headed by Xia Houyuan to Jicheng for rescue. In August, Xia Houyuan's reinforcements still did not arrive. Wei Kang surrendered and Ma Chao occupied Ji City. He acquiesced in Zhang Lu's execution of Yang ang to assassinate Wei Kang. Xia Houyuan led his troops to attack. When he was more than 200 li away from the city of Hebei, Ma Chao led his troops to fight and defeated Xia Houyuan's reinforcements. Then Yang Qianwan, king of Baiqing Di, and Agui, king of Xingguo Di, also responded to Ma Chao and led their troops to Xingguo, so Xia Houyuan withdrew. Ma Chao took Ji City as his base and separated Longshang. He claimed to be a general in the West. He led the army of Bingzhou and supervised the military of Liangzhou.
