Chapter 14 of Lao Tzu: "if you don't see it, it's called Yi; if you don't hear it, it's called Xi." "The book of rites · University": "absent-minded, blind, deaf, food and do not know its taste." [original] the so-called self-cultivation in the right heart, the body has anger (1), then not right; there is fear, then not right; there is joy, then not right; there is worry, then not right. He is absent-minded, blind, deaf, and does not know the taste of food. This is called self-cultivation in the heart. Selected from University: cultivating one's moral integrity
translate
The reason why it is said that to cultivate one's own character, one should first correct one's own mind is that anger can not be corrected; fear can not be corrected; like can not be corrected; worry can not be corrected. If one's mind is not right, it's like if one's heart is not on one's own body: though one is looking, one doesn't see; though one is listening, one doesn't hear; though one is eating, one doesn't know what it's like. Therefore, to cultivate one's own character, one must first correct one's mind.
Interpretation
Zhengxin is the learning ladder after sincerity. Sincerity is the sincerity of the mind, not self deception. But sincerity alone is not enough. Because sincerity may be dominated by emotions such as happiness, anger, sadness, joy and fear, which makes you become a slave of emotions and lose control. therefore, after the "sincerity of one's mind", one must also "correct one's heart", that is, to control one's feelings with a correct mind (reason) and adjust them, so as to maintain a moderate and peaceful attitude and concentrate on cultivating one's character. It should be noted that reason and emotion, righteousness and sincerity are not absolutely opposite and incompatible. Zhu Xi said: happiness, anger, sadness, joy and fear are indispensable to the human heart. However, once we can't observe ourselves and let them control our actions, we will lose our mind. Therefore, the right mind is not to completely abandon the emotions such as happiness, anger, sadness and music, not absolute abstinence, but to let reason restrain and control the emotions, so that the mind can not be controlled by the emotions, so as to achieve harmonious self-cultivation. That is to say, to cultivate one's morality is to have a correct mind, not to be half hearted, not to be led by feelings, "absent-minded, blind, deaf, eating without knowing its taste". (these sentences later became related idioms and famous sayings. They are used to vividly depict the state of mind not belonging and mind not being concentrated. They are commonly used by teachers to criticize students in class.) In this way, self-cultivation is in the right mind, so there is no sense of mystery.
