Idiom story
Tao Yuanming, the great poet of Jin Dynasty, is very famous in the history of Chinese literature. Although his family has been an official for generations, he lost his father at the age of eight and his mother at the age of twelve. However, Tao Yuanming was poor, ambitious and diligent. Later, he became the county magistrate of Pengze (now Jiangxi) under the recommendation of his uncle. However, Tao Yuanming loved nature by nature. Within a few days of taking office, he missed his hometown and wanted to resign. He felt that he came out to be an official just to make a living, but after he had no worries about food and clothing, he was very painful because what he did violated his heart. Soon after, Tao Yuanming's sister died in Wuchang (now Echeng, Hebei Province). He wanted to go to mourn immediately, so he resigned. In this way, Tao Yuanming only served as an official for more than 80 days, and then he lived a pastoral life. It is also recorded that Tao Yuanming gave up his official seal and lived in seclusion in the countryside because he refused to submit to a domineering postman sent by the prefecture. After Tao Yuanming lived in seclusion, he wrote "a farewell to the past", which is the origin of the idiom "knowing where to go astray". In the preface of this Fu, he sums up his life and realizes that although the past is irreparable, there is still time to make up for the future. It means that it's wrong to be an official. It's still time to go back to seclusion. I really lost my way. Fortunately, although I lost my way, I still know how to come back. Many of his pastoral poems were created after that.
