The Western Jin Dynasty was a short and dark Dynasty in Chinese history. In 265 ad, Sima Yan, Emperor Wu of the Jin Dynasty, replaced the Cao Wei regime and established Luoyang as its capital. The ruling clique was decadent and fiercely contending for power and profit. It was only 51 years for the country to perish. If it was calculated from the destruction of Soochow, it would be only 36 years. At that time, a man named Suo Jing saw the serious problems in the Western Jin Dynasty and made a precise prediction of its demise. Suojing, whose name is Youan, was born in longle (now Gansu Province) of Dunhuang. He was born in an official family and was the grandson of the elder sister of Zhang Zhi, a famous calligrapher in the Eastern Han Dynasty. His father suozhan served as the northern prefect. Suo Jing had "the quantity of Yiqun" when he was young. He studied in Luoyang Taixue with his fellow countrymen Si Zhong, Zhang Biao, Suo Jie and Suo Yong. Because of his excellent talent, Suo Jing was well-known in the world and was known as "the five dragons of Dunhuang" at that time. Suo Jing was recommended as an official at a young age because he was "knowledgeable in classics and history, and also known as neiwei". Later, he successively held such official posts as shangshulang, Jiuquan prefect, grand general, Dangkou general, and Sanqi Changshi. He was granted the title of Marquis of anleting. He was meticulous and had a long-term vision. Soon after the establishment of the Western Jin Dynasty, there appeared various social phenomena, such as bureaucratic competition for wealth, political corruption and so on. He carefully analyzed these phenomena and predicted that the world would be in chaos and the Jin Dynasty would decline, but he was unable to change this situation, so he was very depressed. One day, he pointed to the bronze camel set outside Luoyang palace and sighed, "I will see you lying in the thorns?" Later, Suo Jing's prediction came true. In 291 ad, the "eight kings' rebellion" occurred in the Western Jin Dynasty. The government was dim, and all parties fought for 16 years. Luoyang, the capital of the Western Jin Dynasty, was seriously damaged. In the second year of Tai'an (303 A.D.), Sima Gu, the king of Hejian, and other soldiers invaded Luoyang. Suo Jing was appointed to an important position and led Guan longyi soldiers to take part in the battle of defending Luoyang. Unfortunately, he was injured and died in the battle. He died at the age of 65. After his death, he was awarded "Sikong" posthumously as Zhuang. Suo Jing was also an influential calligrapher in Chinese history. He was famous for his ability to write cursive script, especially Zhang Cao. Commentators describe his calligraphy as "like the wind and birds of prey flying" to show its strength; or "like snow mountains and isolated pines, glaciers and dangerous rocks", and think that "his title is in sequence with that of Xi (Wang Xizhi) and Xian (Wang Xianzhi)".
