as soon as the melons are ripe one will be relieved -- to be replaced from a job
As a Chinese idiom, Pinyin is j í Gu à é Rd à I, which means to be replaced by someone at the end of his official term. It comes from Zuo Zhuan, the eighth year of zhuanggong.
The origin of Idioms
In the eighth year of zhuanggong in Zuozhuan, it is said that "the envoys of the Marquis of the Qi Dynasty are even called, and they are in charge of their father's garrison at kuiqiu. The melon goes from time to time, saying, "wait for the melon and replace it."

allusion
Qi Xianggong's cousin Gongsun's ignorant father died early. His father Qi Ligong (also known as Qi Yugong) liked Gongsun's ignorance very much and treated him as the crown prince. Qi Xianggong was very jealous. As soon as Qi Xianggong became king, he got rid of Gongsun's ignorance. Twelve years later, Qi Xianggong sent his father to guard the border (kuiqiu, now along the great wall of Qilu and mulingguan). In Guaqi period (July), he sent them there and promised to send someone to take their place in Guaqi period the next year. But a year later, the melons were rotten in the field, and Qi Xianggong didn't send someone to replace them. Someone reminded him that Qi Xianggong didn't care. The two men were very angry, so they united Gongsun Xiaoxue and led the troops back to the capital city. They rushed into the palace and killed the Duke of Qi. Gongsun Xiaoxue called himself king of Qi. later generations use the metaphor of "wait for the melon to replace it". The day of replacement is coming. From the time of eating the melon this year to the day when the melon is ripe next year, someone must replace it. It's about honesty. In the story, the Marquis of Qi Dynasty didn't keep his word and was overthrown at last. It shows that a man should keep his word, otherwise he will ask for trouble.
