Idioms and allusions
Guan Bao refers to Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya, who were good friends during the spring and Autumn Period in the 7th century BC. Guan Zhong was relatively poor and Bao Shuya was relatively rich, but they knew and trusted each other. The profound friendship between Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya has become a good story handed down from generation to generation in China. In China, people often use "Guanbao's friend" to describe the intimate and trusting relationship between themselves and their good friends. It is said that hundreds of vassal states were enfeoffed in the early Zhou Dynasty, and only more than 100 were left in the spring and Autumn period. Among them, Qi, Jin, Chu, Qin, Lu, Wei, Yan, song, Chen, Cai, Zheng, Cao, Wu, Yue and so on are the largest. All these vassals wanted to be the overlord themselves. Therefore, the main feature of the spring and Autumn period was that big powers competed for hegemony. There were five overlords successively, which is the five overlords of the spring and Autumn period mentioned in the history books. One is: Duke Huan of Qi, Duke Wen of Jin, Duke Xiang of song, Duke mu of Qin and King Zhuang of Chu. Another view is: Duke Huan of Qi, Duke Wen of Jin, King Zhuang of Chu, King Helu of Wu and King Gou Jian of Yue. Duke Huan of Qi was the first to be the overlord. The state of Qi is in the north of Shandong Province. Qi's hegemony is inseparable from Guan Zhong, the great statesman of Qi. Duke Huan of Qi's hegemony mainly depends on his help. But it was Bao Shuya who recommended Guan Zhong to Duke Huan of Qi. Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya are good friends. At first, Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya were partners in business. Guan Zhong's family is poor, and he doesn't pay as much as Uncle Bao, but when it comes to dividends, he wants to take more. Bao Shuya's people were very unhappy and scolded Guan Zhong for being greedy. But Bao Shuya explained: "where is he greedy for these money? His family's life is difficult. I gave it to him voluntarily. " On several occasions, Guan Zhong helped Bao Shuya come up with an idea to do things, but he failed to do it. Bao Shuya was not angry. He comforted Guan Zhong and said, "it's not because of your bad idea, but because of the bad timing. Don't mind." Guan Zhong had been an official for three times, but he was dismissed every time. Bao Shuya thought it was not because Guan Zhong had no talent, but because he didn't meet anyone who appreciated him. Guan Zhong once led the army to fight. When he attacked, he hid behind, but when he retreated, he ran in the front. All his soldiers looked down upon him and did not want to fight with him again. Bao Shuya said: "there is an old mother in Guan Zhong's family. He protects himself to serve his mother. He is not really afraid of death." Bao Shuya defends Guan Zhong and tries his best to cover up Guan Zhong's shortcomings in order to cherish Guan Zhong. When Guan Zhong heard these words, he was very moved and sighed, "my parents gave birth to me and uncle Bao understood me." Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya thus formed a life and death friendship. Later, both Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya went into politics. At that time, Xianggong, the king of Qi, had no son but two brothers. One is Gongzi Jiu, whose mother is from the state of Lu (now the southwest of Shandong Province); the other is Gongzi Xiaobai, whose mother is from the state of Wei (now the north of Henan Province). One day, Guan Zhong said to Bao Shuya, "in my opinion, the one who will succeed to the throne in the future is either childe Jiu or childe Xiaobai. You and I will help each other." Bao Shuya agreed with Guan Zhong's idea. From then on, Guan Zhong became the teacher of Childe's correction, and Bao Shuya became the teacher of Childe Xiaobai. Qi Xianggong was very cruel and fatuous. He often found fault and scolded the minister. In order to avoid disaster, the young masters fled to other countries to wait for opportunities. Guan Zhong assisted the Duke Jiu who lived in the state of Lu, while Bao Shuya served another Duke Xiao Bai of Qi in the state of Ju. In the 12th year of King Zhouzhuang (685 BC), Gongsun Xiaoxue killed Duke Qi Xianggong and seized the throne. In less than a month, Gongsun was killed by the ministers. Some ministers of the state of Qi secretly sent envoys to the state of Ju to welcome young master Xiaobai back to the state of Qi. Hearing the news, Duke Lu decided to lead 300 chariots to escort him back to Qi with Cao Mo as the general. He first asked Guan Zhong to take some soldiers to intercept young master Xiaobai on the road. Guan Zhong, with 30 military chariots, chased his son Xiaobai day and night. When they came to Jimo (now Southeast of Pingdu County, Shandong Province), they heard that the army of the state of Ju had passed for half a day, and then they went on their way, chasing for more than 30 miles at a time. They saw from a distance that the army of Ju state was making a fire and cooking by the side of a small tree forest, and young master xiaobaiduan was in the car. Guan Zhong ran forward and said, "where are you going, young master?" Xiaobai said, "go to the funeral." Guan Zhong said, "young master Jiu is older than you. Just have him to handle the funeral. Why do you hurry! Bao Shuya knew Guan Zhong's intention and said to him unhappily, "Guan Zhong, go back quickly. You don't have to worry about each other's affairs. " Guan Zhong looked around and saw that all the followers were looking at each other as if they were going to fight against him. Looking at their own people, they were much less than them. He thought that they had to suffer a loss, so he pretended to agree and retired. After a few steps, he suddenly turned around, bent his bow, took his arrow, aimed at Xiaobai, and shot with one arrow. Just listen to Xiaobai yell, spit blood, fell on the car. There was a swarm of people running to the rescue, and some of them yelled "no good!" Then, many people burst into tears. Seeing this, Guan Zhong thinks Xiaobai must be dead, so he drives back to report to Duke Lu Zhuang. Duke Zhuang of Lu said that Xiaobai was dead. He immediately held a banquet to celebrate his death. Then he took his son to rectify his death and slowly headed for the state of Qi. Where do you know that Guan Zhong didn't kill Xiaobai, but only hit Xiaobai's coat hook. Xiao Bai was afraid that Guan Zhong would shoot again, so he bit his tongue and pretended to spit blood to die. In the confusion, everyone was concealed by him. It was not until Guan Zhong went away that Xiaobai opened his eyes and sat up. Bao Shuya said, "we have to run fast. Maybe Guan Zhong will come back." So, young master Xiaobai changed his clothes, sat in a covered car and took the path to Linzi, the capital of Qi. At this time, Mr. Lu Zhuang and his son are still on the way! The ministers of Qi who originally advocated the establishment of Prince Xiaobai as the monarch said to Bao Shuya, "you want to establish Prince Xiaobai as the monarch. What can you do when Prince Xiaobai comes back?" Bao Shuya said: "the state of Qi has been in civil strife for a long time. Only a wise man like Xiaobai, the young master, can be stable. Now young master Xiaobai comes back earlier than young master Jiu. Isn't it just God's will? If you think about it again, Duke Zhuang of Lu escorts you back. If you become the king of the country, Duke Zhuang of Lu will certainly extort money and property. The state of Qi is miserable enough. How can you stand that? " After listening to Bao Shuya's reasoning, the ministers agreed to let Xiaobai, the famous Duke Huan of Qi, ascend the throne. It took several days for Duke Lu Zhuang to lead his army to the border of Qi. He heard that the young master Xiaobai was not dead, and he had become the king of the country. He was very angry and immediately attacked Qi. Duke Huan of Qi had to send troops to fight. The two armies had a scuffle during the Qianlong period (now in the west of Zibo City, Shandong Province). The Lu army was defeated greatly. Duke Luzhuang abandoned his car and fled, only to save his life. The land of Wenyang in Lu was also occupied by Qi. You can't eat a handful of rice by stealing chicken. Lu zhuanggong was defeated and returned home. Before he could breathe, the army of Qi came to him again and forced him to kill his son Jiu and hand over Guan Zhong. As soon as Duke Zhuang of Lu saw that the soldiers were pressing down on the border and were unwilling to risk the risk of subjugation for a young master, he quickly ordered to kill him, and asked someone to arrest Guan Zhong and send him to the state of Qi. Counsellor Shi Bo said to Duke Zhuang of Lu, "Guan Zhong is a genius in the world. If Qi uses him to enrich the country and strengthen the army, it will be a great threat to us. I think it's better to leave him in Lu." At this time, Lu zhuanggong's heart was only the Qi army outside the country. How dare he leave Guan Zhong behind? Before Shi Bo finished speaking, Duke Zhuang of Lu said, "how can that work! The enemy of Duke Huan of Qi, on the contrary, we will use him. Duke Huan of Qi will not spare us. " Shi Bo said, "if you don't use him, you should just kill him so that the state of Qi won't use him." The Duke of Lu Zhuang is determined to kill Guan Zhong. Uncle Bao sent Xi Peng to the state of Lu to meet Guan Zhong. When he heard that the Duke of Lu Zhuang was going to kill Guan Zhong, he was flustered. He ran to the Duke of Lu Zhuang and said, "our monarch hates Guan Zhong so much that he has to kill him himself. You give him to me. " Duke Zhuang of Lu had no choice but to hand over his head and Guan Zhong to Xipeng and take them back to Qi. Guan Zhong entered the boundary of Qi, where Bao Shuya had been waiting for a long time. As soon as he saw Guan Zhong, he immediately asked people to open the prison car, let Guan Zhong out and return to Linzi together. Bao Shuya arranged for Guan Zhong to live in his own home, and then went to recommend Guan Zhong to Duke Huan of Qi. Duke Huan of Qi said, "isn't Guan Zhong the guy who shot me with a hook? I still have the arrow he shot! I want to peel his skin and eat his meat, and you want me to reuse him? " Bao Shuya said: "at that time, each was his own master! When Guan Zhong shoots you, he only has childe correction in his heart. Besides, if you really want to enrich the country and strengthen the army and establish a hegemony, you can't do without a large number of wise people. " Duke Huan of Qi said, "I have already thought about it. Among my ministers, you are the most loyal and capable. I want to ask you to be my prime minister and help me to enrich our country and strengthen our army." Bao Shuya said: "I'm far worse than Guan Zhong. I'm just a cautious and law-abiding man
