At the end of the Qin Dynasty and the beginning of the Han Dynasty, fan Kuai, Li Shang, Xia Houying and Guan Ying became prominent figures because they took refuge in Liu Bang. Fan Kuai used to be a butcher who killed dogs. Because he married empress Lu's sister, he was granted the title of Wuyang marquis. Li Shang was granted a letter to become king, Xia Houying was granted Ruyin Marquis for saving Liu Bang's wife and children, Guanying was granted Xuanling king.
