Idioms and allusions
In the spring and Autumn period, there was a man named mengchangjun in the state of Qi. He raised 3000 diners at home. Mengchangjun divided these people into three grades: upper, middle and lower. First class guests can eat big fish and meat every day, and they have cars to ride when they go out. Middle class guests can only eat fish and vegetables every day. Second class guests can only eat vegetables every day. One day, a friend of mengchangjun introduced a man named Feng Yuan to mengchangjun's house. Mengchangjun asked his friend, "what's the specialty of this man named Feng Yuan?" My friend thought for a long time and said, "I don't seem to have any expertise." After listening to this, mengchangjun didn't pay much attention to Feng Yuan. When the servants saw that mengchangjun ignored Feng Yuan, they thought that the host looked down on Feng Yuan and entertained all the guests he was waiting for. Feng Yuan was very unhappy and complained every day: "since everyone looks down on me, I'll just leave!" When mengchangjun knew this, he promoted Feng Yuan from a inferior guest to a superior guest, and gave him food and things for his mother. Feng Yuan thought, "mengchangjun is so kind to me, I must find a chance to repay him!" Once, mengchang sent Feng Yuan to Xuedi to collect debts. Feng Yuan pretended to be mengchang's order and told all the people who owed mengchang money not to pay back. He bought a good reputation of "righteousness" for mengchang! But mengchangjun didn't know it was for his good and blamed Feng Yuan. Later, mengchang was removed from the position of prime minister by the king of Qi. When he returned to Xuedi to live, the people of Xuedi warmly welcomed him. People took the old people, even the children, out of the city to welcome them. Mr. mengchang said with a smile, "I see the" righteousness "that my husband bought for me." The idiom "supporting the old and carrying the young" comes from this.
