The idiom comes from Chapter 21 of Cao Xueqin's a dream of Red Mansions in Qing Dynasty: "if there is persuasion in it, there is no danger of going into business; if you kill its fairyland, there is no heart of love; if you lose its spirit, there is no feeling of talent."
