Idiom story
During the reign of emperor Zhao of the Western Han Dynasty, Han Yanshou, a Yan man, was the prefect of Zuo Fengyi. Once, when he visited Gaoling County, he met two brothers who complained to him. One of them said, "my brother took up my farmland." Another said: "this land was originally given to me by my parents when they were alive. My brother insisted that it was given to him without reason." this event touched Han Yanshou a lot. He was very ashamed to say: "as a prefect, I am the head of a county. I can't educate the people. Today, there is a bone and flesh dispute among the people. This not only injures the morals, but also disgraces the virtuous and filial sons. The responsibility lies with me, and I should step down and give up my position. " On this day, Han Yanshou shirked his illness and stopped dealing with official business. He stayed alone in a room of the library, closed the door and thought about his own mistakes. The two brothers who complained were deeply influenced by Han Yanshou's actions. With tears in their hearts, they went naked to the museum to plead with Han Yanshou. Han Yanshou was very happy. He opened the door to invite the two brothers to meet, and set up wine, meat and dinner to encourage those who repented and followed the good deeds. Since then, Han Yanshou has dealt with political affairs and expressed his gratitude to Ling, Cheng and other officials. The people in the county admonished each other and did not dare to commit the crime again. The surrounding 24 counties are in good faith and harmony, and there are no more lawsuits.
