Idiom story
Liu Lanzhi married Jiao Zhongqing at the age of 17. She went to the Jiao's house to serve her parents in law and to caress her younger brothers and sisters. She was attentive everywhere. But her mother-in-law was eccentric and harsh. She stipulated that Liu Lanzhi should weave five pieces of silk besides doing housework every day. Liu Lanzhi got up early in the morning and went all out to finish all this. Her mother-in-law was not satisfied and insisted on driving her back to her mother's home. Liu Lanzhi and Jiao Zhongqing have deep feelings and are not willing to part. Jiao Zhongqing kneels down to his mother and asks for Lanzhi to stay, but Jiao's mother is very bossy and insists that Jiao Zhongqing divorce Liu Lanzhi and marry him again. Under Jiao's mother's coercion, Jiao Zhongqing had no choice but to say to Liu Lanzhi, "I didn't want to leave you, but my mother's coercion was so severe that I couldn't help it. I had to let you go home for a while and I'll pick you up later." The two men were tearful and inseparable. At parting, both husband and wife firmly said: the man will not remarry, the woman will not marry again, and they will die together. However, Lanzhi thought: after going home, my mother would be able to get through, and my brother would be sad. So she said to Jiao Zhongqing, "my brother is irritable and arrogant. After going home, he may not let me go, and he may not make me do what he wants." As Liu Lanzhi expected, her brother forced her to remarry immediately after returning home. Lanzhi was determined not to, so she drowned herself one night. Jiao Zhongqing got the sad news of Lanzhi's suicide. He was so sad that he hanged himself in the garden that night.
