Idioms and allusions
Di Renjie was born in Bingzhou (today's Taiyuan, Shanxi Province) in the Tang Dynasty. When he was young, he once served as a member of the army in Bingzhou. At that time, his parents were far away in Heyang (now Mengxian County, Henan Province). Once, di Renjie went out to work and climbed the Taihang Mountain. Because of his homesickness, he couldn't help looking at Heyang and saw a cloud floating in the sky. Di Renjie pointed to the white clouds and said to the people who were with him, "I will give up my family." His parents live under the white clouds. He looked for a long time until the white clouds dispersed. In September 700 ad, di Renjie died of illness at the age of 71. Hearing the news, Wu Zetian was very sad and said with tears, "the court hall is empty!" It is said that after his death, di Renjie was buried in di Ren Village, Ci County, Handan, and the tomb is still there. "Baiyun qinshe" refers to living in a foreign country and missing their parents.
