In 1937, Xu Qianli was born in Xujia village in Songjia town (now Zhangxing town) of Zhaoyuan. His great grandfather was Xu Dengyong, the boss of Hongtai (the predecessor of Longkou fans), who was the first of 108 fan shops in the 1860s. Most of his family business was in Longkou. When he was one year old, Xu Qianli followed his father to live in Longkou. On the eve of liberation, he moved to Shanghai and finally settled down in Beijing. He studied painting under Lu Liguang, the first teacher.
In 1958, at the age of 20, Xu Qianli began to create illustrations and comic books for newspapers such as Beijing daily and started his own painting career.
