Sun Yan was a Confucian scholar in the Three Kingdoms period. Word Shu ran, Le'an (today's Shandong Boxing) people. When he was educated by Zheng Xuan, he was called "the great Confucian of Dongzhou". He once wrote Zhouyi Chunqiu example, annotated Maoshi, Liji, Chunqiu sanzhuan, Guoyu, Erya and Shangshu, and Erya Yinyi had a great influence.

" Later generations thought that Sun Yan initiated Fanqie, but later found that he began to use Fanqie earlier than Sun Yan. Sun Yan's Erya Yinyi has been lost. More than 100 examples of Fanqie in Erya Yinyi by Sun Yan have been quoted in classics, Jiyun, Chuxueji, Yinyi of Jinshu, Zhengyi of the book of songs, Wenxuan, Li Shanzhu and Taiping Yulan. We can see some phonetic phenomena in the late Han Dynasty reflected by these few anecdotes. For example, in Erya shigu, the words "Shen Xuan Pu ban fan" are read in accordance with poetry. Sun, Guo fangman, fan, under the words: "Guo Zhixiao, fan "Sunduhuanan" and "Yintu, sunyinnang" in Shichong have become valuable materials for the study of ancient Chinese pronunciation in Han and Wei dynasties.
