Life of the characters
On July 20, 1918, Wu Zhongwei was born in a scholarly home in qifangzhuang, Nansha Town, Zhangjiagang City. His father, Wu Ruizhen, graduated from Shanghai Fine Arts School and went back to teach in his hometown. Just a hundred days after his birth, Wu Zhongwei's family moved to his grandparents' home outside Xinqiao, Jiangyin. Wu Zhongwei studied in Xinqiao primary school, Wuxi Experimental Primary School and Liangfeng junior high school. In 1936, he graduated from Suzhou high school in Jiangsu Province and was admitted to the Civil Engineering Department of Nanjing Central University in the same year. in 1940, he graduated from the Department of civil engineering, Chongqing National Central University. After graduation, he was assigned to work in Qijiang daohuai Committee. During this period, he participated in the research on lime fired clay cement, which was the first in the development and application of clinker free cement in China. In May 1945, Wu Zhongwei went to the United States for further study. in 1947, he returned home from his studies and worked as an associate professor in the Department of civil engineering of Nanjing Central University. He first proposed the concept of "concrete science and technology", organized the first concrete research team and founded the first concrete research laboratory in China. In August 1949, Wu Zhongwei went to Beijing to participate in the preparatory work of the Research Institute of North China kiln company (the predecessor of China Building Materials Research Institute). Since 1950, Wu Zhongwei has cooperated with relevant departments to vigorously promote scientific concrete mix design and guide on-site quality control and winter construction technology. In 1951, he cooperated with Wang Jizhou to develop the earliest concrete admixture air entraining agent in China at that time, which was successfully applied in Tanggu new port and Huaihe River harnessing project, improving the durability of the project. In 1953, he first raised the problem of alkali aggregate reaction in dam concrete engineering, and assisted the Yangtze River academy of Sciences in establishing a research team to prepare for the Three Gorges Project. Since 1954, Wu Zhongwei has successively served as director, vice president and chief engineer of concrete Office of Cement Research Institute of Ministry of building materials industry. During his tenure, he promoted the policy of replacing steel and wood with cement products proposed by the leaders of the building materials department, organized a research team, and vigorously researched and developed a series of cement products. In the same year, he was rated as a first-class engineer, but Wu Zhongwei was modest again and again, and then he was rated as a second-class engineer. In 1956, he was rated as a first-class engineer. In 1959, Wu Zhongwei first published the "hypothesis of concrete Centrality", which pioneered the study of the influence of concrete composition and structure on performance through submicroscopic and microscopic methods. In 1974, Wu Zhongwei returned to the Academy of building materials science. In 1978, Wu Zhongwei was concurrently professor and doctoral supervisor of the Department of civil engineering of Tsinghua University. 1979-1991, chief engineer, vice president and technical consultant of China Academy of building materials science. In order to solve the problem of anti cracking and anti-seepage of concrete, and to guide and promote the research of expansive concrete, Wu Zhongwei proposed the shrinkage compensation mode of concrete, which was popularized in combination with engineering practice. since 1980, he has trained doctoral and master students in Building Materials Research Institute, Tsinghua University and Wuhan University of technology, and served as the editorial board member of cement and concrete research, an international magazine. from 1982 to 1985, he was a member of the first evaluation group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, vice president of Wuhan Institute of building materials, and director of Beijing Graduate Department of Wuhan Institute of building materials. In 1984, he served as technical consultant and professor level senior engineer of Building Materials Research Institute. In 1992, Wu Zhongwei first put forward the suggestion of researching and popularizing HPC in China. According to the sustainable development strategy, the new concepts of "environment-friendly cementitious materials" and "green high performance concrete" are put forward; according to the current situation of China's cement industry, the suggestions of industrial structure reform are put forward, and a large amount of industrial waste is used, so that cement and concrete gradually become environment-friendly bulk building materials. In 1994, he was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering. Since 1995, he has been the technical consultant of the National Natural Science Foundation of China project "Research on durability and damage of concrete for Three Gorges Dam" and the national key project "Research on safety of concrete for key projects" in the ninth five year plan. In 1998, he was elected as a senior academician. In November 1997, Wu Zhongwei was diagnosed with cancer. in February 2000, he died in Beijing at the age of 82 due to ineffective treatment for cancer metastasis.
Main achievements
scientific research
Wu Zhongwei pioneered the cause of concrete scientific research in New China, first put forward the concept of "concrete science", organized the first concrete scientific research team, carried out the earliest concrete scientific research work in China, creatively put forward the measures to prevent the alkali aggregate reaction causing the damage of concrete structure; he guided the Research on the mechanism and application of expansive concrete, and provided reference for solving the problems of concrete engineering in China Cheng has made great contributions to crack resistance and seepage prevention; he has opened up a comprehensive study of cement deep processing in China, and he advocates the development of green high performance concrete. Wu Zhongwei initiated the early concrete science and technology work in China through the determination of concrete related terms and the introduction and promotion of concrete technology. It is found that the collapse accident of 30 tons of mass concrete in Tanggu new port is caused by the freeze-thaw cycle under the action of sea water. The correct scheme of using air entraining concrete to solve the problem is put forward, which has been successfully implemented after liberation. In 1951, he cooperated with Wang Jizhou to develop the earliest concrete admixture in China - rosin hot polymerization air entraining agent (trade name "Great Wall brand air entraining agent"). It has been successfully applied to the construction of Foziling reservoir and other important projects. In 1953, the problem of alkali aggregate reaction in dam concrete engineering was first proposed in China. since the mid-1950s, he has led the scientific research team to carry out the research, development and promotion of concrete and cement products. The products include steel wire mesh cement ship, cement pressure water pipe, prestressed concrete pole, asbestos cement pipe, plate, tile, concrete hollow block, prestressed concrete pile, rural housing components, etc., saving and substituting a lot of steel and wood to meet the construction requirements Design needs. Among them, the output of self stressing concrete water pipe and cement farm ship has ranked first in the world. the "hypothesis of concrete Centrality" published in the late 1950s and the "hypothesis of cement-based composite Centrality" further developed later are one of the important signs of China's concrete science and technology from scratch and reaching the world's advanced level in the 20th century. In the 1990s, according to the sustainable development strategy, he first proposed the research and promotion of high performance concrete in China, and put forward the new concepts of "environmental friendly cementitious materials" and "green" high performance concrete.
