Xiang Si

Xiang Si (around 836 ad in Tang Dynasty), a famous poet in late Tang Dynasty, was born in Le'an County, Taizhou prefecture (now Xianju, Zhejiang Province). Yang Jingzhi, the son of the state who offered sacrifices to the emperor, became famous. He became a poet in Chang'an. In the fourth year of Huichang, he was promoted to the first rank of a scholar, and eventually became a Dantu Wei. He died in his office. Xiang Si is not only the first Jinshi in Taizhou, but also the first poet in Taizhou to go to the whole country. His poems included 88 poems in a volume in the whole Tang poetry, which was listed as one of the hundred poems in the Tang Dynasty. Xiang Si wrote a volume of poetry, and the new book of Tang, Yiwenzhi, was handed down to the world.

Detailed life

According to the scattered historical materials such as the chronicle of Tang poetry and Xiang Si's poems, we can infer that Xiang Si lived in the period from Baoli to Huichang, belonging to the middle and late Tang Dynasty. When Xiang Qi was young, he built a thatched cottage in front of Chaoyang peak. He read all day, recited poems, discussed rhymes, and had a good personal relationship with the temple monk Zaiyang (mentioned in his "memory of the former residence of Chaoyang peak" and "returning to Yin after he lost his position and happy to meet the monk Zaiyang"). Xiang Si's ambition is not successful. The two poems "sending to Jiangnan's family after he lost the imperial examination" and "returning to the throne after he lost the imperial examination to meet the monk again" describe his melancholy feeling when he lost the imperial examination. In the third year of Huichang (843), Xiang Si heard that Yang Jingzhi, the son of the state, was a "man of sexual love". He was most fond of helping his descendants, so he took his poems to the audience. After reading it, Yang Jingzhi really appreciated it and presented it with a poem saying: it's always good to see poems several times, and the standard of observation is too much. Xiang Si was famous for his "poetry reaching Chang'an", and he was awarded the second rank of Jinshi in the second year, and was awarded the title of "Runzhou Dantu" (now Zhenjiang, Jiangsu). "Shuo Xiang" has become an eternal story in the literary world. This allusion is quoted in the first couplet of Liu Yazi's "feelings to Chairman Mao" which is "the founder of heaven and earth, the king is really healthy, and it's difficult to say things according to Liu I". Although Xiang Si was not as famous as Li Bai, Du Fu and other famous poets in Tang Dynasty, he was also a very active figure in the poetic world at that time. Xiang Si's "poetry reaches Chang'an", as the first influential poet in Taizhou, has an indisputable historical position in the history of Xianju County, Zhejiang Province.
