Liu Yun is the leader of the national key discipline of developmental biology. He has been engaged in the research of reproductive physiology, artificial propagation and breeding of fish and aquatic cash crops for a long time.
Life of the characters
On November 17, 1929, Liu Yun was born into a peasant and small handicraft family in qingshuping Township, Shuangfeng County, Loudi City, Hunan Province. When he was a child, his family relied on his father to do small business and his mother to weave hats by hand.
In 1937, his parents brought Liu Yun and his sister-in-law to Wugang county. When he graduated from primary school, he was admitted to the private Dongting middle school in Hunan Province (now the second middle school in Wugang City).
At the beginning of 1945, all the teachers and students of Dongting middle school fled to Huitong mountain area at the junction of Hunan and Guizhou provinces. Liu Yun insisted on studying under the kerosene lamp for more than three hours every day.
In 1948, he was admitted to Hunan National Normal University.
In 1949, he was transferred to Biology Department of Hunan University.
In 1953, he graduated from the Department of biology of Hunan University and was assigned to the Department of biology of Hunan Normal University as assistant professor and Secretary of the Department.
In 1956, at the recommendation of Dong shuangqiu, the then director of the Department of biology of Hunan Normal University, Liu Yun was recommended to the Institute of experimental biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences for further study of experimental embryology. He studied with Zhuang Xiaohui and Zhu Xian, and since then he has stepped into the door of fish research.
From 1956 to 1958, he studied experimental embryology (Developmental Biology) in Institute of experimental biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In 1958, he returned to the Biology Department of Hunan Normal University from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, met the "great leap forward" and went to Changsha comprehensive farm to "open the door to run a school".
In 1982, he joined the Communist Party of China.
In 1995, he was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering.
On April 8, 1998, Xiangyun Industrial Co., Ltd. was established in Hunan Normal University with the mission of promoting the national "863" high-tech pilot development projects "Xiangyun crucian carp" and "Xiangyun carp" presided over by academician Liu Yun.
On November 26, 1999, the lecture hall of biology building of Hunan Normal University held a ceremony to celebrate academician Liu Yun's 70th birthday.
In 2000, the Key Laboratory of proteomics and developmental biology in Hunan Province, presided over by Professor Liu Yun and Professor Liang Songping, was officially approved to be included in the construction rules of Key Laboratory of the Ministry of education.
In 2008, he donated 1 million yuan to establish the "Liu Yun scholarship".
At 5:7 a.m. on January 21, 2015, due to invalid medical treatment, he died in Changsha at the age of 86.
Main achievements
Achievements in scientific research
In theory, Liu Yun has established a systematic reproductive physiology of China's main cultured fish (mainly four big fish), Chinese soft shelled turtle (soft shelled turtle) and frogs (edible). In practice, he has developed a technical system for artificial propagation and breeding of cultured fish and aquatic economic market. The first tetraploid fish population with stable genetic characters and natural reproduction was established in China and abroad by using the integrated technology of cell engineering and sexual hybridization, and high-quality triploid crucian carp and triploid carp were successfully cultivated.
When Liu Yun studied the fertilization cytology of black carp (female) and Megalobrama amblycephala (male), he found for the first time that the distant hybridization of fish has the process of fertilization cytology, thus denying that some Chinese and foreign experts believe that the heterologous sperm of distant hybridization of fish can only play the role of activating egg and limiting fertility. This theory is called "Liu's theorem" by the international fish research community. In the study of crucian carp hybridization, Liu Yun found that the male is partially fertile, cultivated F1-F10 generation, and cultivated a tetraploid population with stable genetic characters, which first overturned the view that crucian carp hybrid F generation is completely sterile at home and abroad. These findings are of great significance for clarifying academic issues and developing reproductive physiology and breeding science of fish and aquatic economic animals.
From 1959 to 1963, Liu Yun devoted himself to the research on the reproductive physiology and artificial propagation technology of the four great fishes. He was the first to study the natural oviposition and fertilization of grass carp with the scientific researchers of the cooperative unit. In 1960, Liu Yun and his colleagues completed the research project of "artificial propagation and technology popularization and application of grass carp and other domestic fish". In September 1995, the project of "self spawning technique of artificial propagation of black carp" solved the problem that the ovulation of female fish was not synchronized with the sperm excretion of male fish. Since then, the breeding of four major Chinese fish has entered the stage of artificial propagation.
As of January 2015, Liu Yun has published more than 100 papers on genetics, aquaculture, science in China and other domestic and foreign journals, and wrote a monograph "reproductive physiology of cultured fish in China".
As of January 2015, the research achievements presided over by Liu Yun have won more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial awards, including the second prize of national science and technology progress award, the first prize of science and technology progress award of State Education Commission, and the first prize of science and technology progress award of Hunan Province, and more than 30 national invention patents.
personnel training
Liu Yun thought: "not only on, not only books, only realistic.". Practice is the objective standard for testing truth. Realism is the driving force for development and progress. "
Liu Yun has trained more than 200 doctoral and master's degree students for the country, and many of them have been promoted to professors and doctoral supervisors in China.

Personal life
Liu Yun's wife, Hu Yunjin, is also a teacher of the Academy of life sciences. When Liu Yun's eldest daughter was born in 1959, he was studying the artificial propagation of silver carp, so he named his daughter Liu Bai silver carp. In 1960, when his second son was born, he was exploring grass carp, which is also called grass carp. He named his second son Liu Cao. When his youngest son was born in 1962, he was named Liu Shaojun at the request of his mother that "not all the children are fish".
Liu Yun loves sports. He loved swimming when he was in primary school. After middle school, he loved running, climbing mountains and playing ball games. At that time, he visited places of interest near Wufeng County, such as Yunshan, nanshanzhai, Dongta, etc. every year, leaving early and returning late. He often walked seven or eight miles a day.
Character evaluation
He (Liu Yun) is a real master, in order to let the people eat fish, eat fish, devoted his life. He is a respectable old man who loves to be born like a son and is amiable. He devoted all his life to the study of fish reproduction. He is the main founder of the artificial propagation of "four big fish" in China, including green, grass, silver carp and bighead carp. He is also the main founder of the basic theoretical research of "four big fish" in China. (Hunan Daily) < / I >
Academician Liu Yun devoted his whole life to China's fisheries research. After half a century of hard research and struggle, he presided over the development of the world's first hermaphroditic allotetraploid fish strain. He presided over a number of major scientific research achievements, such as "artificial propagation and technology popularization and application of domestic fish", which have been popularized and applied throughout the country and produced significant economic and social benefits.
