Liu Zhi, whose name is Zuoqing, was born in Pengcheng, Xuzhou. The fourth son of Liu Zhiji, a minister and historian in the Tang Dynasty.
He joined the army as a guard of the left prison, moved to wailang, a member of the criminal department, and took the post of Sima in Longxi. He supported emperor suzong of Tang Dynasty to ascend the throne, moved to Shizhong, followed Prime Minister Fang Guan to go to war, destroyed the whole army, and demoted to governor of Langzhou.
