Wang Kui was born in Wuling (now Changde, Hunan Province) and served as the governor of Wuping during the Five Dynasties. Originally a soldier of Jingjiang, he served as commander of Jingjiang during the reign of Ma Xihe in southern Chu.
In 956, Wang Kui was ordered by Chai Rong, Emperor Shizong of the Later Zhou Dynasty, to attack the Southern Tang Dynasty. His army passed Yuezhou (now Yueyang, Hunan Province). Wang Kui's subordinates extorted rewards from pan Shusi, who was trained by Yuezhou regiment. They were greedy but still unsatisfied. They falsely accused Wang Kui of treason. Wang Kui was angry with his words, and pan Shusi was greatly afraid. Therefore, they attacked Langzhou preemptively. Wang Kui returned to fight back and fought with pan Shusi outside Wuling city. He was defeated and killed.
In 951, the first year of Guangshun in the Later Zhou Dynasty, Ma Xie, the king of Chu, ordered Wang Kui and Zhou Xingfeng to lead soldiers to repair the burned King's house of Chu.
