Yang Lian was open and aboveboard and refused to flatter the powerful. At that time, Zhu Yijun, Emperor Shenzong of the Ming Dynasty, had not seen any court officials for many years. Imperial concubine Zheng colluded with the officials of other dynasties and alienated the flesh and blood feelings between emperor Shenzong and Prince Zhu Changluo (emperor Mingguang). Yang Lian saw through Zheng Guifei's plot and was deeply worried about the prince's future and fate. In his view, the crown prince is the foundation of a country, and if the foundation of a country moves, the world will be in chaos. Therefore, he linked the stability of the prince's status with patriotism and loyalty to the monarch, and firmly supported Zhu Changluo.
In the 48th year of Wanli (1620), Zhu Yijun was ill for a long time, so he called Zhu Changluo to serve medicinal food in front of the Royal couch. However, due to Zheng Guifei's obstruction, the prince was not allowed to meet his father. Yang Lian secretly sent someone to the east palace to accompany Wang An, asking him to let Zhu Changluo "invite him to serve, taste the medicine and see the meal, and return it at dusk.". Try to get close to Zhu Yijun and prevent imperial concubine Zheng from spreading imperial edicts and confusing the government. At the same time, Yang Lian combined with Ke Dao to urge the scholars from the university to send hundreds of officials to the Qianqing palace to greet them. Fang Congzhe was afraid of Zheng's anger, so he tried every means to shirk responsibility and said, "the emperor taboo disease. That is to say, I dare not pass it around. " Yang Lian immediately quoted Wen Yanbo of Song Dynasty as a precedent, and asked him three times a day to "know that the court officials are in the second order palace, and help themselves.". Fang Congzhe couldn't push any more, so he had to do it.
After the death of Zhu Yijun, Zhu Changluo ascended the throne for Guangzong. However, four days after he ascended the throne, Zhu Changluo fell ill. At that time, there were rumors in the palace that Zhu Changluo's illness was due to the loss of Zhu Changluo's health caused by the eight beauties offered by imperial concubine Zheng. Cui Wensheng was instigated to take cathartic to aggravate his condition. Hearing these rumors, Yang Lian was deeply worried about Zhu Changluo. She decided to eliminate the threat of imperial concubine Zheng to Zhu Changluo, so she contacted the court officials to ask imperial concubine Zheng to move the palace and drive her away from Guangzong. In addition, he impeached Cui Wensheng for "medication without certificate" and exposed the ambition of Zheng Guifei to become empress dowager. Yang Lian's language is sharp and gunpowder is strong. Everyone is worried that Zhu Changluo will be very unhappy after seeing it. On the third day of the memorial, there was still no movement. Just as he was about to breathe a sigh of relief, suddenly word came out from the palace that Zhu Changluo would summon the minister tomorrow and announce Yang Lian and the royal guards school. The courtiers knew in their hearts that the official school of xuanjinyiwei usually ordered them to carry out the "Imperial Staff". It is speculated that Yang Lian's summoning this time must have been more sinister than lucky. Fang Congzhe urged Yang Lian to go up to the hospital and plead guilty, but Yang Lian insisted, "death is death, what's the crime of Lian (death is death, what's the crime of me)?"
In the morning of the next day, all the officials entered Zhu Changluo. Zhu Changluo feebly said something to make everyone do their duty and be loyal to the court, so he turned his eyes to Yang Lian and stared at him for a long time, never saying a word. Everyone was worried when Zhu Changluo sighed, pointed to Yang Lian and said, "this is really loyal to the king." The imperial edict to expel Cui Wensheng and take back the imperial edict to make imperial concubine Zheng empress dowager, and also let Yang Lian become a minister of life. Yang Lian was very grateful for Zhu Changluo's trust. From then on, she worked tirelessly and vowed to serve the court to the death.
On the first day of September, Zhu Changluo died. Li Xuanshi, his favorite imperial concubine, wants to follow the example of Zheng Guifei, and is going to hide Zhu Changluo's eldest son from the school. Zhou Jiamo, a foreign minister, also claimed that the eldest son of the emperor had neither a direct mother nor a biological mother, and that Li Xuanshi should be treated as a caretaker. Li Xuanshi was insidious and cunning. When Zhu Changluo was around, she was arrogant and dominated the harem. She killed Zhu Youxiao's biological mother, Wang. Later, taking advantage of Zhu Changluo's serious illness, she colluded with imperial concubine Zheng and asked her to be empress dowager and empress herself. Once Zhu Changluo was bothered by her, so he called several ministers to discuss and prepare to make her the imperial concubine. Unexpectedly, Li Xuanshi, who was hiding behind the curtain, was not satisfied. He reached out from behind the curtain and pulled Zhu Changluo, who was standing next to Zhu Changluo, into the school. He whispered and pushed him out. Zhu Youxiao knelt down on the ground and asked his father to choose Li as his queen. This kind of violation not only made the ministers present angry, but also made Zhu Changluo turn pale. In order to prevent Li Xuanshi from interfering in the government and disturbing the national system by taking advantage of the eldest son of the emperor. Yang Lian and a group of upright courtiers were determined to take risks to turn the tide.
On the morning of that day, Yang Lian and Zuo Guangdou urged his colleagues Fang from the university to come to Qianqing palace together. As soon as we arrived at the gate of Qianqing, there were internal officials holding stilts to block the way. Yang Lianda scolded: "slave! The emperor called me to wait. If Cao does not listen, what do you want to do? " Then he waved his hand to block the stiles, and the courtiers swarmed in. After they finished crying, they found that Zhu Youxiao, their eldest son, had not kept a vigil before Zhu Changluo's coffin. Asked about the eunuch, all faltering, dare not answer. When Yang Lian saw that Wang An, Zhu Changluo's confidant, motioned to Xi'an warm pavilion with his eyes, he immediately understood and turned around to whisper a few words to everyone. Then everyone knelt down to Xi'an warm Pavilion and called for meeting the prince. Li Xuanshi is holding Zhu Youxiao and hiding in the West warm Pavilion. He has already been scared out of his mind. Wang an then entered, pretending to persuade, said the emperor's eldest son to see the ministers can be sent back. After that, he took Zhu Youxiao out of the cabinet, and all the officials waiting outside rushed Zhu Youxiao into the chariot that had been prepared, and escorted him out of the Qianqing palace. Li Xuanshi then recovered and hurriedly told the eunuchs around him to stop him. The eunuchs chased and dragged the sedan chair, shouting: "where is the master? The Lord is young and fearless Yang Lian was very angry and scolded: "Your Highness, the Lord of all the ministers, who are you afraid of?" The eunuchs were speechless when they were scolded, and then they retreated bitterly.
Yang Lian and others carried Zhu from school to Wenhua hall, and immediately held the ceremony of "Zhengdong Palace". It was also agreed that the emperor would reign in the Qianqing Palace on September 6, 1620, the first year of Taichang.
When Li Xuanshi saw that the eldest son was taken away, he was very angry, but the overall situation had been decided. She decided to stay in the Qianqing palace to coerce Zhu Youxiao into making her empress dowager. When the news came out, Ju Chao was aggrieved and asked Li Xuanshi to move the palace. Li Xuan sent the eunuch to summon the prince to Qianqing palace, but Yang Lian stopped him. He said, "Your Highness is the crown prince in the east palace. Now the emperor is going to choose his servant an Dezhao?" The angry eyes forced the eunuch to retreat.
On the fifth day of September, I saw that the grand ceremony for the crown prince to ascend the throne was approaching, but Li Xuanshi was still in the Qianqing palace. Anxious, Yang Lian contacted the ministers to gather at Ciqing palace and asked the scholar Fang Congzhe to take the lead in inviting the prince to issue an imperial edict to drive Li Xuanshi to move to the palace. Fang Congzhe, however, said with disapproval, "it's harmless if it's too late." Yang Lian argued: "yesterday, the eldest son of the emperor was still in the imperial palace. Tomorrow, the son of heaven, is he living in the Imperial Palace instead of the palace people?" When
