Yuezhou ancient town

Yuezhou is named after "the city goes higher and higher". Its ancient city was built in the 20th year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1387 AD), and has a long history of more than 600 years. The ancient town is located in the hilly area on the East Bank of Nanpanjiang River. It is concave all around and high in the middle. It is nearly 1000 meters long from east to west and 650 meters wide from north to south. During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, the inner city was built, 15 meters away from the outer city, all of which were rammed earth walls. The base of the outer city wall is 12.4 meters wide and 9 meters high, which is inclined inside and straight outside. The walls of the city wall are made of clay, broken bricks and lime. The ancient city has four gates, East, West, North and south, and each street intersects at the crossroads in the center of the city. In the Ming Dynasty, there were West Gate Street in Town God's Temple and the fifth hall in the East and the hall of Notre Dame. There were Guanyin temple and three official Temple in the North Gate Street. There were Sun Temple in the south gate and temple of God of wealth at the east gate. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty, Wenchang Pavilion was built in the center of the city. In addition to these buildings, most of the residents lived in bungalows of civil structure, and a few of the families of officials and gentry had quadrangles.
