Overview of scenic spots
Shanghai Xintiandi
The center of Shanghai (Xintiandi · Shanghai) is an urban tourist attraction showing the historical and cultural features of Shanghai. It is a leisure pedestrian street integrating catering, commerce, entertainment and culture based on the unique Shikumen old building area of Shanghai. Based on the integration of the West and the East and the combination of the old and the new, the traditional Shikumen Lane in Shanghai is integrated with the new buildings full of modern feeling.
Brain Child
Ruian has selected Benjamin wood, an American expert in the renovation of old buildings, as well as the Japanese architectural design firm of Singapore with oriental cultural background, and invited the famous architectural design institute of Tongji University as a consultant. Architectural designers should consider many aspects from the perspective of protecting historical buildings, urban development and architectural functions, and inject new vitality into these old buildings to meet the needs of consumers in the new century.
The architects finally decided to retain most of the Shikumen buildings in the northern part of the plot, interspersed with some modern buildings; the southern part of the plot is mainly new buildings reflecting the characteristics of the times, with a small number of Shikumen buildings, and a pedestrian street connects the southern and northern parts of the plot.
spare neither labor nor money
Ruian spent more than 600 million yuan (about 75 million US dollars) on the relocation of nearly 2300 households and more than 8000 residents. After considering the needs and functions of future business premises, Ruian made systematic changes to these buildings which were originally residential buildings, like pruning the branches and leaves of a big tree. After pulling out a few houses, a beautiful Dutch style Shikumen building with a roof will spring out. When the illegal buildings are removed, the lane hall, which is rarely seen in the urban area, will be seen again. In this way, the preserved old buildings have their own characteristics, like historical building galleries.
Retain building materials
Due to the long history, overuse and lack of maintenance, the preserved Shikumen is beyond recognition. Some of it must be rebuilt. In order to reproduce the image of these Shikumen alleys, Ruian searched everywhere, and finally found the original drawings signed by the French architects from the archives, and then built them according to the drawings. The clear water brick wall of Shikumen building is one of the characteristics of this kind of building. In order to emphasize the sense of history, Ruian decided to keep the original bricks and tiles as building materials. The modern facilities are installed in the old house to ensure that the function of the house is more perfect and reliable, while preserving the original construction features, just to achieve the purpose of "renovating the old as the old". The price of "old" is much higher than that of new brick and tile. Ruian specially imported an expensive moisture-proof liquid from Germany, which was injected into every brick and crack of the wall like an injection. Two layers of waterproof and heat insulation materials are placed before the tiles are laid on the roof, and then the old tiles injected with moisture-proof chemicals are laid.
The new vitality is injected into the old building of Shikumen, a new building. There is no infrastructure such as underground drain pipes and gas pipes. Every building in Xintiandi must be excavated for several meters. Some of them need to be as deep as nine meters, laying underground water, electricity, gas pipelines, communication cables, sewage treatment and fire fighting systems. The old house is not demolished, and the excavator can not enter the operation site, so the construction is very difficult. Workers laying water pipes and gas pipes are careful not to damage the "culture" by accident. Some old buildings have rotten wood, so their internal structure must be redone, but what can be preserved is still preserved by all means. However, safety is still the first consideration of developers, and the firmness of the building structure can adapt to the continuous flow of consumers in the business place. Shanghai Xintiandi repairs the old Shikumen at any cost, not only to be similar in form, but also in the spirit of similarity. It is not a simple repair, but a higher level of transformation.
Past years
At the beginning of this century, Shikumen Lane in Shanghai is still a concentrated expression of dilapidated, crowded and poor living conditions in the minds of many young people. Fortunately, even so, there are still a group of nostalgic literary masters who make architectural culture complex, so that many of us find the beauty hidden behind it.
Historical sources
In Shanghai dialect, it is called "hoop" to use one thing to wrap or bind another, such as a coop. Therefore, this kind of building with stone hoop door is called "stone hoop door" and then mistakenly called "Shikumen". It is generally believed that the main gate of this kind of building is made of stone with solid thick wood and a copper ring. Compared with traditional Chinese houses, it tends to be conservative.
Shikumen residence in Shanghai rose in the 1860s. In 1860, the Taiping Army headed by Li Xiucheng, a loyal king, launched an eastward movement to conquer Zhenjiang, Changzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou, Ningbo and other cities in southern Jiangsu and Northern Zhejiang, forcing tens of thousands of refugees from southern Jiangsu and Northern Zhejiang to seek refuge in Shanghai concession. In order to accept the refugees, the concession mobilized businessmen to invest in housing construction. In order to make full use of the land, most of these houses were built as row connected Shikumen lane houses. In order to cater to the traditional Chinese family living style, Shikumen not only imitates the western style houses, but also imitates the common houses in the south of the Yangtze River. After entering the door, there is a patio. Behind the patio is the living room (called "guest hall" by Shanghainese). Then there is the back patio. After the day after tomorrow, there is the kitchen and the back door. On both sides of the patio and the guest hall are the left and right wing rooms. The layout of the second floor is basically similar to that of the ground floor, except that the upper part of the kitchen is the "Pavilion", and the upper part is the sun terrace. Its representative buildings include xingrenli, which covers an area of 1.33 hectares, on the east side of Henan Middle Road, between Ningbo Road and Beijing Road, and dunrenli, mianyangli, Jixiang Li, etc., on xintoujie street, Zhongshan South Road.
After the beginning of this century, with the change of Shanghai residents' family structure to small family structure, the living habits of residents have also changed significantly. The structure and style of Shikumen residence have changed. There are "single entrance" (no wing room) and "two entrances" (one passenger hall and one wing room) suitable for small families. Its large scale, lane width is about 4 meters, the floor is mainly 2-3 floors; in the staircase platform with pavilions, the facade using balcony; after the 1920s, generally installed sanitary equipment. Its representative buildings include Jing'an villa on Nanjing West Road and new mainland village on Shanyin road. After the 1930s, due to the shortage of housing in Shanghai, some residents rented out their spare rooms to others, so most of the Shikumen changed their original design intention and became a multi family house.
Gossiping
The Shikumen residence, which is from childish to mature, constitutes a Lane community with private space and public space interlaced. In this community, while enjoying personal space, it is easier for residents to cultivate a more harmonious and intimate neighborhood relationship. So we all know exactly what we cook today and what we have to do tomorrow. With the increase of residential density, residents gradually move their family activities to the public space in the lane, which further strengthens the original neighborhood intimacy. In the meantime, there are more and more frictions, whether between young people or between young people and old people. These frictions and quarrels are just about "you use more of my gas", "you invade my territory" and so on.
Go and stay and cherish
When Shikumen lane was the largest, there were more than 9000, accounting for more than 60% of the total residential area in Shanghai. Simply from the perspective of architecture, Shikumen is the product of a specific historical period, which has a history of more than 100 years. Moreover, the spatial structure of some Shikumen is not suitable for the living concept of modern people, so it is normal for them to disappear. In the early 1990s, Shanghai began large-scale reconstruction and development. Many old houses in Shikumen have been destroyed
